“Love me or hate me, you better show me some f—–g respect now,”  Ian Machado Garry declared after winning against Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City.  Ian Garry is following in Conor McGregor’s footsteps, who rapidly became UFC’s short-notice risk taker. The Future’ is 27 years old, and he is already 16-1-0 inside UFC with one loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov. Wins over Neil Magny, Geoff Neal, and MichaelVenom’ Page put him in the Top 10, and then he was ready to take short notice against Rakhmonov. Even though he lost this fight, he again took a short notice against Prates and redeemed himself by winning via unanimous decision.

Despite a late scare in the fifth round, Ian Machado Garry held his ground and sealed the deal with judges’ scores of 48–47, 48–47, and 49–46. The gritty win didn’t just reaffirm his place among the welterweight elite—it also punched his ticket as the official backup for the UFC 315 title fight. But is he still being underestimated and compared to his rival, Colby Covington?

Looks like Josh Thomson did this in his recent Weighing In podcast. Thomson said, “I couldn’t figure out what he was doing and why. And the only thing I could come up with was I concluded that the street was throwing you off. And I think also to a lot of people who fight Ian Garry? Look at him like an almost like a Colby Covington. They don’t want to lose to him. With Colby Covington, you don’t have to worry about getting knocked out. He had no power, he had no stand-up, like you don’t need to worry about that. What do you have to worry about was Ian Gary will knock you the fu— out.”

Thomson criticized Prates for his smoking habits and said that it might have contributed to him losing the fight. As per the ex-UFC lightweight star, Prates had good cardio, but he was exhausted in the later rounds. But Thomson decided to compare Garry to his arch-rival, Covington. For the unversed,Chaoshad decided to take a jibe at a very sensitive point against the Irishman. The #7 welterweight star talked to TMZ recently and said, “There’s a reason I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again when that man [Covington] goes to bed and he closes his eyes, he fears me. He’s never going to step into the Octagon with me and back it up, and he knows why.”

Why? Well, because back in 2023, the former interim champ made degrading commentaries about Garry’s wife, Layla. It’s clear that Garry still regards Covington with disdain, who last fought in December when he lost to Joaquin Buckley. But the thing is, Ian Garry and Joaquin Buckley also don’t like each other.

Ian Garry’s wife was dragged into drama yet again

‘The Future’ andNew Mansa’ do not see eye to eye. Garry and Buckley, of course, were originally set to face each other at the UFC Tampa card last December. However, Garry pulled out to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov on short notice at UFC 310, and the fight never materialized.

Garry won the fight against Prates, and Buckley took some scathing jibes at the Irishman. But the height of the feud was reached when Buckley posted a video about an incident from the weigh-ins before UFC Kansas. He even posted a video from the same event where Buckley can be seen approaching the stage. As he went to the stage, Garry’s wife, Layla, handed their baby to Garry, who was on stage. Then she turned around and sawNew Mansaapproaching and greeted him politely while touching his arm.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Ian Garry the next big thing in UFC, or just another fighter riding McGregor's coattails?

Have an interesting take?

However, Buckley had a humorous recollection of the incident and described the scene in detail on his Instagram profile.  “Whattup y’all? Y’all know how I had to pull up on Ian Garry at the weigh-ins for talking all that mess in the interview. So, I wait till he gets done, and I wait patiently. As soon as I pull up, boom, she [Garry’s wife] brought him [their baby son] right to him. She’s gonna use the baby as a shield and pass him off to him. So I’m likeAight, aight, I’ll let you have that one. But as soon as I was about to turn around, she came over to me, caressed my arm, and said,I’m going to see you later on tonight. Bro, the f–k that mean? I’m trying to see him, not you, he declared, narrating his side of the story.
