Undefeated UFC star Ian Garry made bold claims about his exit from welterweight champion Leon Edwards‘ gym, Team Renegade. But in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on ‘The MMA Hour’, the 26-year-old Irish MMA sensation provided a vivid picture of the events that led him to leave the Birmingham-based outfit.

Ian Garry has been spending time training in various gyms before he was a member of Leon Edwards’s gym. While the welterweight champion has given his take on the Irishman’s departure, ‘The Future’ has provided more insight regarding the day he was approached by ‘Rocky’s team. Let’s see what he had to say.

Regardless of the differences Ian Garry has with Team Renegade, the 13-0 fighter claims to have a great relationship with Leon Edwards’ gym staff. However, he was once approached to leave the gym, although in a very respectful manner, according to ‘The Future’. “It’s very simple… I have a very good connection with that gym and I went up one day and I was politely asked to not return,” said Ian Garry

Nevertheless, Garry had booked to train with some of the other coaches on that day. So, he was allowed to do what had paid for. Ian Garry added, “I was then driving up that day anyway because I had booked sessions in… and do some work.” Furthermore, the Irishman also provided an account of his takeaways from the conversation he had with the gym members. Let’s have a closer look at that front.

Was ‘The Future’ a “threat” to the welterweight champ?

Given that the UFC champion’s coach told him not to return to Team Renegade, Ian Garry decided to have a chat with Leon Edwards. However, he bumped into the owner of the gym and ‘Rocky’s coach Dave Lovell, who opened up about the situation. Garry said, “I went to Renegade to talk to Leon, and I was stopped by Ash [Beggs], one of the owners of the gym, and Leon’s head coach. We sat outside and had a conversation about it.”

The conversation with the Gym staff led Ian Garry to conclude that he could have been a factor in Leon Edwards building his insecurities. “What I took away from that conversation was and I’ve repeated this very, very clearly, that Leon and his head coach did not want me training on the mats with Leon. He did not want Leon having doubts or insecurities about the team or about the mats because there’s a threat on the mats,” ‘The Future’ further added.

Ian Garry might have to shift his focus from the Team Renegade situation to his next fight. He was forced to pull out of UFC 296 due to pneumonia. Nevertheless, he has to get back strong if he is thinking of getting into title contention. Garry will face Geoff Neal at UFC 298 as we wait for an official confirmation regarding Leon Edwards’ next title defense.
