In the UFC, the referee plays a crucial role in ensuring the fighters’ safety and maintaining the match’s integrity. A good referee should have extensive knowledge of the sport, a sharp eye for detail, and the ability to make split-second decisions.

Without competent referees, the UFC would not be the professional, safe, and exciting sport that it is today. Recently, there was some controversy surrounding the referee of the match between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman at UFC 278. Recently, UFC veterans Chael Sonnen and Henry Cejudo also talked about this.

Cejudo referred to a video by Sonnen. In a video posted by ‘The American Gangster’, he claimed that Edwards cheated during their previous fight, which he won by knocking Usman out with a head kick in the final round. He also suggested that Edwards got away with a number of other infractions during the fight that went unnoticed by the referee.

Former UFC champion Henry Cejudo agreed with Sonnen‘s assessment. He went further to suggest that the referee of the previous fight, Herb Dean, should not be the referee for the upcoming match. ‘Triple C’ believes that switching up the referee is necessary when there are concerns about the fairness and safety of the match.

Speaking on fairness during the match, Sonnen said, “Leon was frustrated in positions and had no way out of positions to the extent that he cheated repeatedly, not once, not an accident, not the ref didn’t see it. The ref saw it, the ref warned him, and the ref stepped in. The ref broke the Act five and six times “

“The other thing too that I would change too is I wouldn’t put Herb Dean as the referee. Because when you see a lot of things of that nature that tend to happen in a fight, you gotta switch up the referee.” Cejudo said.

He further added, “You had to take every edge if you’re in Kamaru Usman’s corners to be able to say hey let’s bring somebody neutral.
