UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has as many critics as he does fans. The Russian star is undoubtedly one of the best lightweights on the planet and is in the upper echelons of UFC’s pound-for-pound list. However, that did not protect him from criticism for treating a fan the way he did. Apparently, Makhachev forbade a fan from doing something that he was not comfortable with while posing for a photo. Netizens disagree that the fan did anything wrong and are going after Makhachev.
Recently, Islam Makhachev was in Qatar for the inauguration of the latest UFC gym in Pearl Qatar. During his appearance there, the 31-year-old posed for pictures with fans. One of those fans did something that unsettled the champion. He asked the fan to refrain and they then posed for the pictures. While both Makhachev and the fan parted on good terms, many on the internet had a few things to say.

In the short clip of the interaction, Islam Makhachev asked his fan to change the hand gesture he was using in the picture. The pair later did the ‘finger pointing up’ gesture for the picture. While the reason behind this action is unclear, some fans explained the former was a symbol for the devil’s horns in Makhachev’s religion. Meanwhile, the latter signified god.

However, there were also those that said those symbols mean different things in different cultures and therefore Makhacehv should not have forced the fan to change it. Suffice it to say that more fans were against the champions than against the fan.
Following are some of their reactions:
Disrespectful bro smh, how could you commit such a vile act
Handled it very well.. I would have passed out as soon as he reached for the hand.
Whats wrong with the sign al bjj dudes from brazil do
Champ probably thought you was doing the horns gesture. There is nothing wrong with the gesture you did.
