After a thrilling five-round battle between the two, Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev had nothing but respect for each other, as seen during the post-fight cage interview. The two champions battled their heart out in a back-and-forth that saw Makhachev’s wrestling and grit, both tested to the limits.

While some felt that the judge’s decision was correct, many of the Australians felt that they robbed the featherweight champ of a win. Now, Volkanovski himself has reiterated his call for a rematch and claimed that he won the fight after rewatching the bout.

In a fresh tweet, the Australian expressed his surprise at the decision while demanding a rematch with the lightweight champ, even claiming to be ready anytime and anywhere.

Alexander Volkanovski tweets his surprise at not getting the win against Islam Makhachev

After the loss, which many felt could have gone either way, the featherweight champ went on Twitter to lay fresh claims on a rematch with the lightweight champ. Volkanovski expressed surprise at not winning the fight, considering he believed he won three of the rounds.

The tweet by the featherweight champ read: “Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won 2,3 and 5. Surprised I didn’t get my hand raised! Let’s do the rematch, anywhere, anytime!”

As evident from the reactions that came after the fight, the Australian is definitely not alone in sharing that feeling. MMA superstar Nate Diaz and even Joe Rogan too felt that Volk did enough to get his hand raised.

The 34-year-old had an interesting point to share during the press conference as well. When asked about a rematch, Volkanovski mentioned that Islam Makhachev was looking for a rematch himself. Although it’s not verified, this is what the Australian had to say: “I’m hearing (Makhachev) was saying, and I could be wrong, but he was going back to his corner saying he wants a rematch. Because he thinks he lost. That’s funny. “And I’ll jump on that. Rematch.”

He then went on to mention how it was something that he couldn’t confirm.“Whether he said it, thought he might have lost, I don’t know. I just heard from someone … I’ll watch the fight and see.” stated Volkanovski.

All judges scored the fight in favor of the Lightweight champion 48-47 twice and 49-46. While some agreed that it was fair, the third judge’s score of 49-46 was what irked fans. Since Volkanovski clearly looked to have won at least two rounds, supporters of the Australian did not hesitate to call out the poor judging.

Although the champ himself took it well without complaining. And considering the fact that he had an impressive outing, Volk could certainly carry that narrative and demand a rematch as soon as possible.
