The UFC big fight feel is not complete without Bruce Buffer screaming his iconic “It’s time!” inside a packed arena. The veteran announcer has been a part of the promotion since its early days. The 65-year-old joined the promotion in 1996 and is still an important part of the company today. Over the years, Buffer has become a fan favorite for his ability to hype up fighters and audiences before a contest. Recently, a video of Buffer just warming up earned him commendations from fans. Furthermore, Buffer himself has trained in martial arts and wished to compete in his younger days. However, that wasn’t meant to be.

The veteran announcer recently appeared on Logan Paul‘s ‘Impaulsive’ podcast. While chatting with Paul and his team, Buffer opened up about his martial arts adventures from his younger days. He mentioned meeting the legendary Royce Gracie, who introduced him to Jiu Jitsu. Following up on that, Paul asked him about his aspirations to compete when he was 32 years old. Buffer then explained his reason for wanting to compete and why it never came to fruition.
Bruce Buffer recaps his failed dream
Bruce Buffer has had training as a kickboxer. He wanted to compete professionally for no other reason than bragging rights. He told Paul, “I wanted to have one professional fight just to say I had it. I was making plenty of money. It wasn’t about that.”
Buffer revealed that he picked up a severe concussion while preparing for the bout- “I mean, I was slurring my words and suffering, you know, that immediate reaction. It was a serious concussion.” What’s more, he picked up another concussion and his doctor had to interfere.

Buffer continued, “They did give me another one, but he looked at me and he said, “Listen,” he goes, “you can train.” He goes, “Is this how you make your money?” I go, “No, I make my money doing this [announcing]. He goes, “Stop. [If] You’re gonna be this way, [when] you’re gonna be in your 40s, you’re gonna have problems. Stop.” So I stopped. As much as I love to spar.”
Therefore, Buffer had to give up the idea of one professional fight to keep his faculties intact for his octagon announcer job. While we may not know what would have become of Buffer if he fought, fans are glad to have him around, announcing their favorite fighters. Hopefully, Buffer keeps delivering the big fight feels for years to come.
