At UFC 286, Leon Edwards managed to beat Kamaru Usman after back-and-forth action for five rounds. For Edwards, this win cemented his legacy, proving that his first victory over the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ wasn’t a fluke. But now when the former champion failed to triumph in his rematch, it’s now who gets to face Edwards next ?
While the welterweight division has always been stacked, currently it’s nothing short of a shark-infested pool. Belal Muhammad, Khamzat Chimaev, Gilbert Burns, and Shavkat Rakhmanov all seem to be in great momentum. But there is one athlete who seems most likely to surpass them all, at least according to Chael Sonnen. And he even has a date.

In the latest video of his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen claimed that Colby Covington is next in line to fight for the welterweight title. Additionally, he also informed that the said fight is likely to go down in November. As a testimony to this claim, the Portland native revealed that this information was broken to him by Colby Covington.
According to Sonnen, this is what Covington has to say: “I do believe he’s gonna have to fight me by November. If he says no to October, it sounds like he’s got some room, but he’s gonna have to do it by November, or I think they’re going to strip him.”
Colby Covington, who was last seen in action against his friend-turned-foe Jorge Masvidal, is currently ranked second in the UFC’s welterweight rankings. This makes him just behind current champion Edwards and former champion Usman. Considering the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ has already had his rematch, this alleged claim of Covington makes sense.

In the MMA community, Sonnen is famous for breaking this ‘insider’ news. Sometimes, they do turn out to be true. But as anybody following the American Gangster will tell you, he isn’t always accurate. Nevertheless, ‘Chaos’ hasn’t fought a single time this year, and it doesn’t look like he would accept anything less than a championship match.
Colby Covington echoes this sentiment
In his recent appearance on Submission Radio, Colby Covington claimed that he is the one who will face Leon Edwards next. According to the former NCAA wrestler, this proposed bout will probably be on the UFC 295 card. It is noteworthy that the card is all set to feature the much-awaited heavyweight clash between Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones.

But at the same time, Covington also believes that ‘Scissor hands’ Leon Edwards is trying to delay this fight. He believes that ‘Rocky’ needs an entire year of camp to be confident enough, and this is the reason that the matchup is delayed.
