“I Think He’ll Take It”: Justin Gaethje Expects a “Fight of the Century” Against Former Opponent Dustin Poirier

The UFC lightweight division is a mix of young blood and veterans. The golden era of the UFC lightweight division saw many fighters who couldn’t reach the ultimate glory of becoming a champion of 155-pounders. Two such lightweights are Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. Having faced each other inside the octagon with Dustin Poirier getting the spoils, the two fighters may have crossed each other’s path again as only one may get to face the champion.

Recently, both ‘Diamond’ and ‘Highlight’ have been going back and forth on the internet. However, Gaethje might just have made it easy for the matchmakers by teasing a fight between the two former interim UFC lightweight champions.

Justin Gaethje expects a “Fight of the century” against Dustin Poirier

The former UFC interim lightweight champion recently appeared in an interview with Damon Martin. ‘Highlight’ spoke about the potential fight between him and Dustin Poirier.

Gaethje said while speaking about their previous fight, “I think we are both different fighters obviously that was five years ago. So yeah it’s a different ball game.” Furthermore, he also spoke about their fight having the potential of becoming “Fight of the Century”. ‘Highlight’ said, “A fight’s a fight at the end of the day. He’s got phenomenal skills. He’s a hell of a matchup for me and you know nothing short of ‘Fight of the Century'”.

Lastly, Gaethje also explained that he is sure of the fight taking place. However, he revealed that some people think that ‘Diamond’ will not take up the fight.

The former interim champion added, “You can’t force anybody to fight I’m not saying that he doesn’t wanna fight me but you know. He probably doesn’t need to have a fight again with how much money he has made. So I don’t know. I think he’ll take it. Some people around me think he won’t take it. All I can do is focus on myself in that regard.”

Dustin Poirier also replied to Justin Gaethje’s interview

‘The Diamond’ took to Twitter to share his thoughts on a potential fight against Justin Gaethje. It seems like Poirier agrees with Gathje’s statement of the fight being a “Fight of the Century”. The former interim champion said, “Fight of the century.”

With both Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje winning their last bout, the fight makes the ultimate deciding fight for the next title shot in for the UFC lightweight championship. It remains to be seen if the UFC decides to make the fight as Poirier and Gaethje have made their work easy.
