Furthermore, Khabib Nurmagomedov was one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC. With an undefeated record of 29-0, he’s never lost a single round, let alone a fight. It’s no wonder he was a lightweight champion. But would Rogan choose Penn over Nurmagomedov?
The Secret to BJ Penn’s Success!
Joe Rogan and Brian Simpson were chatting about BJ Penn, one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. According to Rogan, Penn’s success can be attributed to his trainer, Marv Marinovich. Marinovich worked with Penn on strength and conditioning, believing that it was the most important aspect of fighting.
Rogan goes on to explain that Marinovich had Penn do crazy plyometric exercises for six weeks to build up his endurance. This paid off in Penn’s fights against Sean Sherk and Diego Sanchez, where he was a “monster.”

He said, “But when he fought, like when he fought Sean Sherk, When he fought Diego Sanchez. That version of BJ Penn, I put that version up against anybody alive or dead.”

Simpson agreed, adding that Penn’s prime should not be overlooked when considering the greatest fighters of all time. However, he also noted that fighters like Penn are not always taken care of later in their careers, leading to a decline in their performance.
What’s more, even Jorge Masvidal weighed in on the debate over Penn and Nurmagomedov.

Joe Rogan was reminiscing about BJ Penn and the intensity he brought to the octagon. According to Rogan, Penn was “so ferocious” and “fu*king good” during his prime. However, he also acknowledged that it was hard to maintain that level of intensity for a long period.
He said, “Like you can only burn that hot for a short amount of time. Like when you’re that good.”

Rogan’s comments highlight the fleeting nature of success in the world of fighting. While Penn may have been at the top of his game for a time, it’s difficult to sustain that level of excellence for an extended period. It takes a special kind of talent and dedication to be able to do so.
