Despite being celebrated as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, Jon Jones has been marred by several controversies, both in and outside the octagon. The most prominent of these controversies is the steroids scandal that Jones got embroiled in, which resulted in him being stripped of his title and suspended from the sport. Although we are in the week of UFC 285, waiting for ‘Jonny Bones’ to make his comeback, that doesn’t stop the haunting past from coming to the surface.

In a recent interview with UFC veteran and former Jones opponent, Chael Sonnen, a new detail about their 2013 matchup came to light, adding to the already long list of eyebrow-raising incidents surrounding Jones. According to Sonnen, he suspected that Jones wasn’t clean when they fought and even revealed that the same goes for him. He went on to describe how he picked up on Jones’ use of enhancement substances and what gave it away, asserting that his suspicions were indeed true.

In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen didn’t hold back when it came to discussing the subject of Jon Jones and performance-enhancing substances. When asked whether he believed Jones fought him clean during their 2013 bout, Sonnen immediately responded, “No. Heavens no. Oh my God… We know our own.”

He went on to explain that during the fight, he became certain that his suspicions were correct. “I could tell, very easily… It would be the body. It would start with your delts, it would go to your nipples, then it would be the upper abs or the three big tells.”

Given that he has never shied away from discussing his use of PEDs in the past, Sonnen also shared just as much about himself. “I had more juice than Tropicana and he pushed me around like a Mack truck versus a Volvo… As soon as we locked up with each other, as he’s pushing me backwards before he comes with his big spinning elbow, I remember thinking, ‘I know your secret because I got the same one,'” said the 45-year-old.

Despite this revelation, Sonnen doesn’t believe that Jones will resort to PEDs for his much-anticipated comeback fight against heavyweight natural Ciryl Gane. He even revealed what makes him believe that.

During the same interview, Chael Sonnen gave his thoughts on Jon Jones‘ return and UFC 285 in general. Although staying on the subject of PEDs, the 45-year-old believes that Jones is not carrying out any sneaky job behind the doors for his return. He said, “I think he is clean for this one.”

Sonnen further added, “He[Jon Jones] is making some pretty big claims that just a, generally, a cheater wouldn’t make. Yeah, so, I just personally think he is probably clean.”
