Israel Adesanya is not the warrior archetype that fighters are expected to be. He watches anime avidly, wears nail paint, trolls other fighters, and taunts a child whose father he has just knocked out. However, he is also one of the greatest champions in UFC history who had proven his mettle in the ring time and again, as he did against Alex Pereira recently.
He was able to comeback from a shock defeat to the Brazilian and knock him out with a novel and unique tactic. Some, such as Luke Thomas, have described the tactic as the MMA version of Muhammad Ali‘s rope-a-dope. And it seems another item can be added to hits list of transgressions- sexual harassment of fellow UFC fighter Sean Strickland.

In an interview with ‘The Halfcast Podcast’ on Youtube, he spoke about his run-ins with middleweight Sean Strickland. ‘Tarzan’ has been publicly critical of Adesanya. In the first incident, Adesanya talks about smacking the American from behind who protests this and is ignored by Adesanya. “Strickland, I smacked him in the a** before I went on that press conference backstage. And he turns around [and] goes, hey, whoa man, don’t do me like you did Costa,” he said.
The second time, at a UFC event in Las Vegas, he went over to greet featherweight Ilia Topuria. Strickland was next to Topuria and stood up when Izzy arrived. According to Adesanya, Strickland started mocking Adesanya. ‘Izzy’ then hit the American in his groin, then turned back and went to his seat, ignoring Strickland’s meek protestations. The middleweight champion reiterated his opinion that Strickland is a “b****”.
“Two weeks ago in Vegas, he’s sitting behind me… I go over and say what’s up to Ilia Topuria…and then he says some s*** [about] China. I was like, hey, it’s in my heart… But then he said something, and then I was like, huh? And I kind of, like, I smack him in the d*ck…And he goes, don’t touch me… and I just hopped back to my seat. But I turned my back because I know he’s a b****, he’s not gonna do s***…,” said Adesanya.

Adesanya used the story to prove the point that he is not afraid of ‘Tarzan.’ In a recent appearance on JRE, Strickland talked about his disdain for ‘Izzy’ and his “low” character, implying he was untrustworthy. He also stated that Adesanya was Chinese and not African because of Izzy’s “My heart is Chinese” comments.
Clearly, there is no love lost between the two. Strickland, who is ranked #6 in the middleweight division has done the right thing by calling out the champion. This is a proven tactic that helped people like Chael Sonnen get closer to the title shot.
