At the main event of UFC 294, Alexander Volkanovski is all set to achieve something that only eight fighters in the history of the promotion have accomplished: double champ status. For those unfamiliar, the Aussie is set to lock horns with Islam Makhachev for the lightweight throne.

The last time these two men met inside the Octagon, it was Makhachev who came out on top. However, despite the upset, Volkanovski managed to give the Dagestani the toughest fight in his career. Even though the current champ enjoys a size advantage, the challenger has shown he can hang with him. Time and time again, the Aussie has showcased his ability to triumph over his challenges, including what might be one of the greatest comebacks in the history of MMA. And Joe Rogan has something to say about it.

Alexander Volkanovski might be one of the most beloved fighters right now, but this wasn’t always the case. He won his title in a controversial manner against the former champion, Max Holloway. As expected, the two featherweights were pitted against each other once again with the title on the line, and the Aussie came out on top. But in a similar fashion, the MMA community wasn’t convinced.

With two back-to-back controversial decisions, people began to question the legitimacy of the champion’s skills. So, when it was time to defend the title once again, the stakes were high for the fighter. However, this time ‘The Great’s test was against Brian Ortega, a fighter who had only lost to former champ Holloway before. With his potent ground game, ‘T-City’ could be a tough matchup for anyone.

Nonetheless, Volkanovski started out strong, outstriking the challenger round after round. However, in the third round, the tide turned in favor of the BJJ standout when Ortega secured a full-mount guillotine on the champion.

For most, it was over, and the featherweight division would have witnessed a new champ. But defying the odds, Volkanovski escaped the choke and went on to win the match, winning the hearts of fans and leaving a lasting impression on Joe Rogan.

In one of the episodes of his podcast, Joe Rogan recalled this moment. Recalling the intensity of the fight, the veteran commentator referred to the choke as beautiful. According to him, it was something that “99 percent of people who ever lived” could have never escaped. But the fact that Alexander Volkanovski did it was truly surprising.

For those unaware, Rogan wasn’t present among the commentators. However, the stand-up comedian wishes otherwise. “It was wild, and I kind of wished I was there. I was out of town for that one, that was my hunting trip, so I had to cancel it. But, god damn, it was so good,” said Rogan.
