Is Donald Cerrone risking his legacy by returning to the octagon after a disastrous losing streak?

One of the latest UFC fighters who’ve decided to come out of retirement is Donald Cerrone. Bellator champion Johnny Eblen recently expressed how much he dislikes seeing ‘Cowboy’ gearing up for some more action after he hung up his gloves in 2022. Well, another person has hopped on that bandwagon as Cerrone’s former employer Dana White revealed that he doesn’t want to see that either.

Donald Cerrone’s retirement in 2022 came in the wake of a disastrous run where he lost 6 out of his last 7 bouts in the UFC. For most fans and pundits, the losing skid was a sign that his body was done with fighting. Dana White emphasized that while claiming that he hated watching retired fighters coming back for a few more fights.

“We literally just talked about this last night… I hate to see these guys. You retire for a reason… and like football, this is a contact sport, and it’s very dangerous,” Dana White stated on ‘Outta Pocket with RGIII’. The UFC CEO seemed to have an idea about the reason why Donald Cerrone and other retired fighters tend to come back for another run. For some, it’s a financial decision, and for others, it’s just about the thrill of that feeling a fighter gets when they enter an arena for a matchup.

“If you can make it through a whole career with everything intact and have a good quality of life, you made it. You did it,” Dana White further stated. “You’ve succeeded so, you have to start focussing on what’s next, and a lot of it [coming out of retirement] has to do with money, and I’m sure a lot of it has to do with that feeling that you get when you run out of the tunnel.”

In the same vein, Dana White showered ‘Cowboy’ with praises as well and told the Hall of Famer that he had certainly achieved what he desired in MMA after hanging up his UFC gloves a couple of years ago.

Dana White claims Donald Cerrone has “proved everything”

From a 29-fight kickboxing career to a 55-fight MMA career, Donald Cerrone fought more than 80 times professionally throughout his career. Although he didn’t win any titles in the UFC, he does have multiple championship wins in MMA and also in kickboxing. Dana White appears to have a lot of respect for the former UFC fighter, who gave him a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame, and also in his recent comments, he thinks ‘Cowboy’ should reconsider his decision and not damage his body any more than it already has after a two-decade-long combat sports career.

Have an interesting take?

“He’s already proved everything there is to prove and I don’t wanna see the guy take any more damage,” the UFC head honcho added. While Dana White may not be happy about Donald Cerrone’s return, the Hall of Famer is aiming to set a record. The 41-year-old wants to be the first fighter to fight 50 times in both the UFC and WEC. Maybe we’ll get to see him achieve that feat, or maybe not.

In the coming months, we will see if Donald Cerrone decides to go at it again. Nonetheless, Dana White seems to be against it. Hence, if his return does take place, it most probably won’t be happening in the UFC. What do you think? Drop your comments below.
