Every once in a while, the UFC will make a fight that many fans will deem to be a mismatch. The most recent entry on that list is UFC 296’s lightweight showdown between Paddy Pimblett vs. Tony Ferguson. On paper, the former Interim Champion, Tony Ferguson does boast the better resume among the two. However, he has barely had anything to show for it in his last few outings. Further, Ferguson has thrown himself into a hellish training regimen with an unlikely coach, raising the eyebrows of everyone, including Paddy Pimblett.

Ferguson is currently riding a 6-fight losing streak, whereas Pimblett is a prospect with no losses in the UFC. The consensus among fans is that Ferguson is not the same fighter he once was, and for good reason. What’s more intriguing is that, for the fight against Pimblett, Ferguson has been training with David Goggins. Goggins is an incredible athlete and no one will debate that fact. However, he is not a trained fighter. The MMA world is concerned about ‘El Cucuy’ and how he’d perform with an unconventional fight camp and now, Paddy Pimblett himself shared his take on the subject.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Pimblett shared his thoughts on the upcoming fight with Tony Ferguson. Pimblett laid out his concerns for Ferguson and his training, stating, “Whatever he’s doing there is just… I don’t even know. I hope he’s not over-trained and his body’s not finished by the time he gets in the cage. I don’t want to hurt him”. Paddy ‘The Baddy’ is by no means looking down on ‘El Cucuy’ as he believes Ferguson is a legend and is always dangerous.

Due to recent settings, Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett believes that a fight with Ferguson is a “lose-lose situation” for the British lightweight. Pimblett stated, “The fact that I’m getting in there with a legend is unbelievable for me.” However, Pimblett does not agree with David Goggin’s training methods, as Pimblett believes Ferguson won’t come inside the Octagon at 100 percent with such a rigorous training regimen.

Ferguson is not someone to slack over, and Pimblett seems to know that very well. In the interview, he gave props to Ferguson and even his performances in his 6 fight-losing streak. Pimblett stated, “He dropped Gaethje, nearly finished him. He dropped Bobby Green in the first round. He dropped Chandler.” So it is safe to assume that Pimblett is coming into the Octagon without cutting any corners. But can we say the same about Ferguson with his unconventional training?

Pimblett, like most people, isn’t truly on board with Ferguson’s new training methods with David Goggins. About Ferguson’s training, ‘The Baddy’ stated, “I think it’s crazy, I think it’s quite stupid.” Pimblett believes that the training would only benefit Ferguson’s cardio and mental strength, which he deems unnecessary as mental strength and cardio are Ferguson’s best traits.

One thing we know, however, is that we can never count Ferguson out of any fight. Paddy Pimblett knows that and seems fully prepared for everything that Ferguson might throw his way. The question now is if the new training regime will be of any help for ‘El Cucuy’.
