Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards have shared a bitter relationship ever since their backstage brawl at an old UFC event. Despite that, they never met inside the cage. However, now the promotion has finally set up a welterweight bout between both the men.

Ahead of the fight getting booked, there was a lot of back and forth on the internet. However, ‘Gamebred’ claimed to have nothing personal with the Brit.

Recently, on an episode of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Masvidal said, “I have always said it. Nothing’s personal. It’s all business in this game. I just don’t like the dude. I could care less for him if he gets rich, or he doesn’t get rich. And I don’t wish him any good or bad. I just I could care less for this individual since I have met him you know.”

“And it’s still the same thing I could give a f**k less about him. It’s just another guy in the way of me achieving my goals and dreams and all the things that I have all the aspirations I’ve had since a child so. Yeah, he is an idiot. I am glad is, you know, I mean he’s an idiot.”

“I’m gonna do what I do slap him up. Beat him up and upset him the whole damn time you know while we are fighting, but to me, it’s never personal with these guys. You know it can’t be. This is a business I signed up for this I know exactly what I signed myself up to. Since I signed the dotted line when I was 18, you know. I knew what I was getting myself into.”

Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards: From Backstage Brawl to the Official Fight

Earlier in 2019, Jorge Masvidal was giving an interview backstage at a UFC event. That is when ‘Rocky’ said a few words while passing by him. This led to a verbal back-and-forth that got so heated that Masvidal ended up hitting Edwards.

Ever since then, the Brit has been asking to fight the American fighter inside the octagon. However, neither was the fight officially announced, nor did ‘Gamebred’ express any interest in fighting Edwards, as he was a low-ranked fighter.

Interestingly, now the Brit has improved himself over the years and is unbeaten in nine straight fights. Hence, he is the higher-ranked fighter.

As Masvidal asked for a name to fast track his journey to the UFC welterweight gold, the UFC gave him ‘Rocky’. Despite initial disinterest from Edwards, circumstances such as other fighters’ timelines compelled all parties involved to agree.
