In a conversation with renowned journalist Helwani on his YouTube channel “MMAFightingonSBN,” the 25-year-old fighter contemplated the recent fight between Adesanya and Strickland. In the middle of the conversation, Helwani asked for his takeaway from the main event of UFC 293. To this, Garry replied with a returning question, “The truth is, Ariel, when you watch the fight back, what did Sean do that was elite?“.

Helwani was quick to answer the question from Garry, Helwani stated, “ Wasn’t it just like he stuck to the basics and he was just really good at what he did”. Helwani explained that it was the basics that helped Strickland obtain that victory.

Garry went on to explain that throughout the entire match, there was no grappling or kicking involved, and only punches were being thrown. He further stated that things would have been different if Izzy had exhibited the same output and efficiency as he usually does. He predicted that if the rematch were to happen, Izzy would dominate Strickland. “He [Strickland] does this for most of the fight. yeah do a jab and through f**k all kicks. So there was no grappling involved, there were no kicks involved, there were a couple of punches every now and then and just constant pressure.

Ian Garry’s statement suggests that if Izzy had maintained his usual level of output and efficiency, his performance would have been stronger. He points out that Sean’s fighting style contributed to the awkwardness and reduced efficiency in Izzy’s performance, indicating that Sean’s approach played a role in Izzy’s difficulties. “I just feel like Izzy wasn’t picking the stuff he normally would and he wasn’t operating on falls business and I think if they run that back then Izzy dominates”.

The seismic impact of this bout was evident from the get-go when Strickland landed a powerful right hand in the first round, briefly flooring Adesanya. While some thought the referee could have halted the onslaught, Adesanya got a second chance but remained unable to crack Strickland’s stripped-down, yet brilliant, strategy. Strickland’s approach and precision 1-2 punch combinations held firm for five rounds, leading him to seize the middleweight world title.
