What does it take to become the #1 contender in one of the most competitive divisions in the UFC? Well, there is no one better to answer that than UFC heavyweight fighter Tom Aspinall. Ever since Aspinall made his UFC debut back in 2020, he has been nothing but spectacular. He is one of the very few names in the heavyweight division who might be new to the game but has definitely carved a place for himself on the roster.
The English mixed martial artist, although gentle and respectful when it comes to his opponent, doesn’t care about holding back when in the Octagon. He has secured some really notable finishes over some of the biggest names in the UFC heavyweight division. The 6 ft 5 in fighter has even called out Jon Jones for a fight. His UFC record stands at an impressive 7-1-0. Today, let’s take a look at the only loss in the heavyweight fighter’s UFC career.

The only fight that he lost was against Curtis Blaydes and that too because he injured himself. With just 15 seconds into the fight, ‘Honey Badger’ dropped down in pain that one can’t even begin to imagine. He was trying to hit Blaydes with a low kick, but instead, his right knee gave in. The referee wasted no time and called the fight off since Aspinall wasn’t able to continue due to his injury. It was the very first fight that he lost, and needless to say, he wasn’t quite happy with it. But that didn’t stop him from competing and winning the next couple of bouts.
The most effective way to gauge the capabilities of a fighter is to take a look at his record and Aspinall’s record is plain impressive. Apparently, Tom Aspinall was offered a UFC contract much earlier in his life. However, he chose to turn it down since he didn’t believe that he was ready for the big leagues. Back then, he was competing in Cage Warriors. He secured two quick victories in the promotion and eventually decided to sign with the UFC.
Tom Aspinall made his UFC debut in 2020. He was initially pitted against Raphael Pessoa, but the fight fell through. Next, his opponent was slated to be Jake Collier. Unfortunately for him, this bout was also postponed due to the pandemic. Then, on 25 July 2020, the fight against Collier finally happened. Aspinall won it by TKO and that earned him a Performance of the Night award.
Gutting scenes, and we're all wishing Tom Aspinall a speedy recovery. 👏@RazorBlaydes265 gets the win, but not how anyone would've wanted it. #UFCLondon pic.twitter.com/4bL56mtw6H

What injury did Tom Aspinall suffer?
When Aspinall fell to the ground, there was confusion all around the Octagon. His knee was all swollen up, and the fighter appeared to be in quite a bit of pain. It was later revealed that ‘Honey Badger’ had his medial collateral ligament torn along with the meniscus. While the fight fans were just about to nod, damage to his anterior cruciate ligament was also confirmed. No wonder Aspinall was in so much agony.

Soon after the heavyweight was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery to fix his knee. Without a doubt, the warrior returned to the Octagon after recovering for a year and defeated Marcin Tybura to overturn his loss. Talking about his injury, the interim heavyweight champ said, “I think that pre-injury Tom Aspinall and post-surgery Tom Aspinall are two completely different people.”
