Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira returned to winning ways with a statement performance at UFC 289. ‘Do Bronx’ silenced his doubters and then some by finishing the favorite Beneil Dariush in the first round of the co-main event. With the win, the #1 ranked lightweight has earned another title shot according to many fans and pros.

While a rematch with Islam Makhachev is what many fans want to see, it may not materialize soon. UFC president Dana White dropped a concerning update about the champion during the post-fight press conference. The 53-year-old said there were factors beyond his control that would determine when that fight would happen.

Oliveira and Makhachev fought each other in Abu Dhabi in October of last year. The Dagestani dominated and submitted Oliveira inside two rounds to secure the lightweight title.

With Oliveira’s most recent win, fans were expecting another showdown between the pain in October in Abu Dhabi again later this year. However, White’s recent revelation might hamper some of those hopes.

Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev 2 may not happen next

While talking to the media after UFC 289, Dana White faced questions about making Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev 2. The UFC head honcho was all in for the idea after watching Oliveira’s performance from earlier that night.

Later, one media member asked him about Makhachev stating during a recent interview that he preferred a fresh challenge over a rematch. The media member then asked if the winner of Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje from UFC 291 in July would get the shot over Oliveira.

White replied, “There’s a lot of things that go into consideration for the next fight. I mean, I’m sitting here talking about him right now. I don’t even know what’s wrong with him. He’s in medicals.”

He continued, “I don’t know where he’s at or what he’s got planned over the summer. The list goes on and on of things that factor into how fights are made. So I’m just telling you right here right now, it’s a fight I’d like to see again.”

White’s revelation about Makhachev is not pleasant news for fight fans. If the champion is facing medical issues, they may not see him in October as expected. Makhachev last fought in February this year at UFC 284.

What do you make of White’s comments about Islam Makhachev? When do you think we will see him fight again? Who would you rather see him fight – Oliveira or someone else?
