In his decade-long association with the UFC, his fight this coming weekend might just turn out to be the most important one Jorge Masvidal has ever had to face. Squaring up against Gilbert Burns, the co-main event at UFC 287 could just end up deciding the trajectory of the veteran’s long and illustrious MMA career.

But despite the magnitude of the pressure, Masvidal’s confidence clearly sees no bounds. ‘Gamebred’ during the latest ESPN interview, showed how he had his sights set beyond the Burns match-up as he took his fans back to the 2019 backstage scuffle with current welterweight champ Leon Edwards. Recalling the altercation, the 38-year-old disclosed for the first time how Edwards’ brother too was involved and had luckily landed a shot of his own on him.

In a unique setup for an interview, Masvidal and ESPN correspondent Brett Okamoto rode through Miami while talking about his journey in the sport and multiple other aspects of his career. Not surprisingly, the duo also happened to talk about 2019 and the amazing year that it was for the BMF star.

While he did win all three of his fights, his performances inside the cage were definitely not the only talking point of the year. His now famous line “three-piece and a soda” was also delivered during that time frame after he and Leon Edwards got into a scuffle backstage at UFC Fight Night London.

Tracking back to the fateful day, Masvidal recalled how the Englishman walked up to him, followed by a group of his people as he was giving an interview.

“He was with four or five dudes. But I know I’m always walking with God and God guys got my back. So I didn’t give a damn who he was with man,” he stated.

He also made a surprising disclosure about what followed after security stepped in.

“…while security was holding me, his little brother got a little su*ker punch in on me,” he revealed.

Knowing the veteran, his next statement also didn’t come as a surprise. Stating that he’d exact revenge on Edwards’ brother for what happened four years ago, Masvidal sent out a cold warning to the champ’s brother.

“So that’s one dude that one day we will have to make things right you know; and by make things right, I mean leave him in a puddle of blood.”

How the rivalry between Edwards and Masvidal pans out is anyone’s guess, especially when off-the-cage stunts get involved. But the other obvious option for the duo to settle it would be to face each other in the cage. For Masvidal, the fight against Burns could provide him the opportunity to do exactly that.
