It’s official! UFC’s smack-talking American superstar Colby Covington is all set to lock horns with rival Leon Edwards at the headliner bout for UFC 296. While there was a lot of speculation about UFC’s Irish star Conor McGregor making a comeback at this PPV event, Dana White has finally dismissed all such notions with the sudden announcement.
What’s more – ‘Chaos’ is not leaving any stone unturned in the build-up to UFC 296. He argues that if he dismantles Edwards and claims UFC welterweight gold, he’s eyeing his first title defense against lightweight champ Islam Makhachev. Backing his arguments, the American MMA star has made some scathing and unsavory remarks at Makhachev. Let’s hear it from ‘Chaos’ himself.

Colby Covington recently sat down for an interview with MMA journalist James Lynch. During their discussions, Lynch brought up the brewing topic of the welterweight fight. Seizing this opportunity, ‘Chaos’ aimed a bold callout at Islam Makhachev, labeling him as ‘M**gol.’
Covington explained, “There’s that little M**gol. He’s been talking a little bit, saying that he wants to come up and fight in a real man’s division. Cause he’s sitting in a little boy’s weight class – and I’m talking about Islam Makhachev.”
This term is not only politically incorrect – but also inflammatory. It’s clearly meant to provoke a reaction from the lightweight champ. Using such language, Covington aimed to undermine Makhachev’s achievements in the lightweight division. It’s worth noting here that the Dagestani champ already has one successful title defense under his belt. But on the other hand, ‘Chaos’ is coming off of 2 pivotal welterweight championship bout losses out of his last four fights. So, is all of this just smack talk?
Covington claims his potential clash with Islam Makhachev could be a ‘super fight’
What’s more – the American MMA star brought up the suggestion that Islam Makhachev is eyeing a move up to the welterweight division. He further added that this move might be an attempt by the Dagestani to secure a fight with a “real man.” A fired-up ‘Chaos’ declared, “So, that little M**gol has been talking. He’s been saying some things – he wants to face a real man – [maybe] America’s champ [referring to himself]. So that might present itself as well.”
Asserting his POV, he declared, “I think that’s a big super fight, and I think that’s a fight the fans want to see. We’re in the same weight class. He probably weighs more than me honestly. He probably walks around [at] 190 [lbs]. He’s pretty yoked up. He’s a big little guy – cuts all that weight to get the advantage because he’s scared to fight a real man like me.”

With these statements, Covington claimed that Makhachev likely walks around at a higher weight, possibly around 190 pounds. This assertion seems to be aimed to paint Makhachev as someone who relies on size advantages rather than skill.
