Tom Aspinall, as you can imagine, is desperate to fight Jon Jones. And so, apparently, are Dana White and co. But as of yet, things are still stuck in neutral for the same reason it was before- Jon Jones has not agreed to the fight. The GOAT contender had asked for ‘f–k you money’ to face the Englishman, and it seems like the UFC and Jones have not been able to agree to terms for an Aspinall fight. With each passing days, fans hope that the heavyweight champ would agree to a unification bout with the English interim champ.

However, as of today, ‘Bones’ hasn’t budged, Aspinall revealed in a video posted on his official YouTube channel.“I want the fight. I’ve been on record and said that I want the fight. I’ve been on the phone with the UFC saying that I want the fight, when’s it happening? I want the fight more than anyone. He’s [Jones is] holding it up right now, it’s his side, that’s the truth of it. The UFC really really want the fight to happen, they’ve told me that this is, as I said, this is one of the biggest fights that can be made in MMA right now. And everybody knows that, everybody knows it. It’s just does he want to put himself in a position where he’s comfortable enough financially to take the risk that he’s taking to fight me. And that is where we’re at,” Aspinall said.

As you can tell, the UFC have told Aspinall they ‘desperately’ want the fight. Which fans already know. After all, the UFC CEO has claimed that this fight will “probably be the biggest fight we’ve ever done.” Which does seem pretty likely. After all, the Aspinall fight will almost definitely be Jones’ last fight, which by itself would sell a fair few PPVs.

Add to that the heavyweight title and the fact that Aspinall is the perfect fighter to take on ‘Bones’, and it is pretty likely that Jones-Aspinall breaks a few records. No wonder he UFC badly wants that fight.

They [the UFC] really, they assure me that they desperately want to make the fight. Every time I speak to them, they say we are working as hard as we can on the fight. And I’m literally just waiting for a date,” the interim heavyweight champ added.

And it seems like Aspinall is getting impatient. The Manchester resident, who likes to stay active, told fans that he was desperate for a fight– with or without Jones– and indicated he will move on if the GOAT contender doesn’t agree to fight him soon

“I’m not bothered where, I’m not bothered who it’s against to be honest. It’s not just the Jon Jones fight I’m looking for, I’m looking to fight man,” Aspinall warned. Of course, Dana White has maintained that Jones-Aspinall will eventually happen. “It’s coming, relax,” White told fans in an Instagram Live late last month. However, there is a chance that the fight does, in fact, never happen. In which case Jones’ most famous rival, Daniel Cormier will be fully vindicated.

Is Jon Jones avoiding Tom Aspinall, or is he just waiting for the right payday?

Daniel Cormier explains why Jon Jones is hesitant to fight Tom Aspinall

If the Jones-Aspinall fight never happens, it will most probably be for a reason Daniel Cormier pointed out on his YouTube channel. ‘DC’, first of all, made clear that he doesn’t think Jones is ‘scared’ to fight Aspinall, as many fans think. No. The UFC commentator thinks that the reason ‘Bones’ is hesitant to fight the Englishman is because of a simple risk/reward calculus.

“I don’t think he’s scared, but again, it’s risk vs. reward… A win over Tom Aspinall does nothing more for Jon Jones than a win over me or Vitor Belfort or Rashad Evans or Shogun Rua or Alexander Gustafsson, and all this list of great fighters he’s already beaten. But losing to Tom Aspinall does do something, because now you see him lose. He’s never lost… So for him to go out there and fight a young, hungry guy who seems to possess the skills to beat him, it’s not worth the risk,” Cormier said.

And it is hard to disagree with the Louisianan’s take here. Indeed, losing to Aspinall, and that too in his last fight would snap the GOAT contender’s essentially undefeated streak, and be a body blow to something he has worked all his career– to stay undefeated. And Aspinall, of course, understands this. Hence his comments about ‘Bones’ wanting to put himself in a “position where he’s comfortable enough financially to take the risk.” In conclusion, there is no progress on the Jones-Aspinall fight, and we can only hope and pray it actually happens one day.
