‘The American Gangster’, Chael Sonnen recently revealed that the next UFC welterweight championship contender, Colby Covington, has chosen the current UFC Lightweight king, Islam Makhachev, as his preferred rival for his maiden title defense. But, the materialization of ‘Chaos’s’ wish is expected to cause some serious issues for the UFC’s Featherweight and Lightweight divisions. But, neither of the two parties, Covington or Makhachev, are worried about them.
Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s noted coach, Javier Mendez, also talked about this issue on his YouTube podcast. Well, Makhachev’s coach didn’t differ from his disciple in his views. The viewers of his podcast might have already realized his views about the fight from the words he gave out. But fans must remember that Covington’s could only come to fruition if he manages to defeat the current Welterweight champ, Leon Edwards at their UFC 296 showdown.

Most UFC fans know how the former Interim Welterweight champ, Covington was about to cut from the roster since his fights didn’t sell. However, it also resulted in him learning the art of promoting his fights better than most other fighters. Makhachev and Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez, was aware of this and hence saw no reason to stand against Covington’s suggested fight against his UFC lightweight champ disciple.
In his podcast, Mendez expressed full support for Makhachev’s choice of opponent for his first UFC Welterweight title defense. He said, “He[Colby] knows how to promote his fights and he needs to move over for sure. You know. Every time he fights, I know I’m gonna get entertained by him and I definitely look forward to watching him fight because he’s entertaining.”
Well, several fans might find a lot of sense in Mendez’s opinion. Most of them know that selling a fight is probably the biggest criterion to earn good in the UFC. Hence, it’s quite apparent Mendez didn’t see any reason to deny the fight. Especially due to the fact that it will ensure a heavy paycheck for both fighters.

Most fans might have already realized that Mendez sees a lot of sense in Covington’s wish to fight Makhachev. However, they might view his next words as a message for the UFC CEO, Dana White, to take Covington’s wish seriously. Mendez saw it as a legitimate fight that could also result in big revenues for Dana White and Co. The box office appeal of both fighters and their ability to sell the fight might play well for the UFC.
He said, “Maybe the UFC goes, ‘Hey, this fight makes sense. Let’s put this together”. “I’m just saying, there’s nothing wrong with what Colby’s doing”. However, fans also claimed that Mendez supports Covington since he sees no harm even if Makhachev loses the bout. However, a win will make ‘the Dagestani’ another champ-champ in the promotion.
