Conor McGregor is the biggest superstar in the history of MMA. He has won multiple championships in the UFC with big money guaranteed whenever he steps inside the octagon. Moreover, many fighters from the past and present recognize his star power and his ability as a fighter. One such fighter is former UFC star, Chael Sonnen.

McGregor hasn’t had the best UFC outing recently with his two consecutive losses. His last defeat came at UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier. McGregor’s last win came in 2019 against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. However, his influence in Dana White‘s promotion is second to none. He has already forged a Hall of Fame-worthy career at 34 years of age.

UFC analyst and critic recently appeared on the Flagrant‘ podcast, hosted by comedian Andrew Schulz. He showered his thoughts on ‘Mystic Mac’ and commended his personality as a UFC fighter. Sonnen also mentioned that McGregor was an excellent talker on the microphone.

Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor is ‘true to his gimmick’

While talking about the best fighter with promotional skills, Chael Sonnen mentioned that Conor McGregor had a great range on the microphone. Sonnen said, “I think what [Conor] McGregor does is great because McGregor is true to the gimmick.” He added, “When he did the ‘your wife is in me DMs’, I mean he’s broken in half, he’s on the canvas. Joe Rogan was down on a knee to interview him, you know.” 

Chael Sonnen mentioned that people may hate McGregor. But the Irishman knows how to be a performer. Sonnen said, “People say ‘well, that’s a real jerk and a real scumbag’ …or that’s a performer that until the freaking ship went down, stayed with the character.”

The former UFC fighter mentioned how McGregor’s body was an absolute mess. Despite that, the former double champion stayed true to his UFC gimmick. “You’re body’s in shock, you got a compound fracture and he [McGregor] stayed with the gimmick till the end.”

Chael Sonnen, himself, is one of the best trash-talkers in the history of the UFC. People gravitated towards him whenever he got to speak his mind. Therefore, he acknowledges Conor McGregor’s ability to ride along the same lines. This isn’t the first time that ‘The American Gangster’ praised the Irishman. Sonnen previously commended Conor McGregor for his entertaining nature back when the former double champion was on the rise.
