"Is Jiri Prochazka's retirement a huge loss for MMA, or is it time for him to move on?"

Jiri Prochazka‘s UFC 303 rematch with light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira was nearly a replay of their first fight. The only difference being that the Brazilian caught ‘BJP’ with a head kick in the second round, this time around, instead of a left hook like their last fight. And Prochazka is shattered. The former 205-pound champ took to Twitter after the loss and posted a video giving his first reaction to the loss.

‘The Czech Samurai’ thanked the fans for their support, and ‘Poatan’ for the exciting fight. What caught fans’ attention the most was Prochazka’s comments that he either needs “to evolve” or retire from fighting. However, he seemed determined to do the former rather than the latter as he promised that he would hit the gym with even more intensity going forward.

“Hello everyone, thank you for all your support. Thanks to you Alex for the fight. Was better. And only one thing goes on my mind. That I need to evolve to the next level. Or don’t fight again. So simple. To be the strongest, this is the way. Thank you. See you in the gym,” he said.

With his second loss to Pereira within eight months, Prochazka will have to work his way up the title ladder once again. In addition, even if he does bounce back, it is unlikely he will have a chance to avenge his two second-round losses. And the reason behind it is simple- Pereira wants to become a three-division champion in the world’s toughest MMA promotion.

Alex Pereira says he still wants to move up to heavyweight after Jiri Prochazka’s rematch

Alex Pereira has speedrun the UFC so far. Not only did the Brazilian manage to become a UFC two-division champion in only seven fights in the UFC, but he now has three title defenses on three blockbuster UFC cards over the past twelve months (UFC 295 at the iconic Madison Square Garden, the UFC 300 anniversary mega-card, and UFC 303 the highest grossing gate event ever in UFC history). The former Glory two-division champ is aiming to make history yet again and become the first three-division champ of the UFC.

‘Poatan’ had called for a heavyweight bout after his UFC 300 victory over Jamahal Hill in April. However, UFC CEO Dana White had brushed aside the idea and suggested ‘Poatan’ defend his 205-pound title. But Pereira, after defeating Prochazka at UFC 303, again reiterated that he wants to move to heavyweight and win the title in the UFC’s heaviest division.

“I think that’s [a move to heavyweight] in my future. I said that the last time I was here. I said it a lot, there didn’t seem to be too much interest in the organization, but I’m here, I’m available and I do think that’s in my future,” Pereira said in his post-fight octagon interview.
