UFC 291 promises to be the redemption event for UFC and Dana White after London turned out to be a major disappointment. The lack of ‘big names’ and ‘exciting’ fight cards were some of the reasons why the turnup was way less than expected. UFC 290, on the other hand, was a great main event with great fight cards and unexpected results.
The main event for UFC 291 is the Lightweight bout between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. The two are the pride and joy of the Lightweight division. Gaethje originally wanted to shoot for the Lightweight championship title which currently belongs to Islam Makhachev, the protégé of the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, in the main event, he shall be fighting Poirier for the highly sought-after BMF title.

The whole of UFC is excited to see two of the most relentless and persistent fighters battle it out in the ring. Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is also excited to see this fight take place. He recently gave his take on the fight in a video that he uploaded on his YouTube channel and had some crucial points that he put across.
“So let’s go with the main event. BMF Belt on the line, Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier. It’s gonna be a fun one. Dustin Poirier is a favorite. Not a massive favorite but I mean he is a favorite by a bit.“, started Volkanovski, making his pick abundantly clear, right off the bat.
He then started talking about the ‘underdog’ that is Gaethje. “And Gaethje being the underdog… obviously they’ve already fought and I feel like the fight does go pretty similar. So if I had to lean towards someone I think it would be Dustin Poirier. I think he’s a bit more tidier.“, remarked the Featherweight champion. Volkanovski is an extremely talented and technical fighter who has a UFC record of 26-2-0.
After making his favorite known, Volkanovski proceeded to talk about the technicalities behind his choice. He talks in detail about how he pictures the fight going down. “Early on Dustin will… put a bit of that pressure. He will sort of put himself in danger a little bit. The thing is, you know, if… if, uh… Dustin gets caught, its early. I think as the fight goes, that benefits Dustin 100%. I think he does get better as the fights go. I think he gets a bit more calculated. He gets better reads and he’s better with his combos, as the fight goes later.“.
Doubling down on his pick Dustin Poirier Alexander Volkanovski concluded by saying, “So I’m gonna have to go towards Dustin to win this one. I think he’s got more ways of winning.“.
Nevertheless, the lightweight clash could be one of the most exciting rematches in the promotion’s industry despite a title not being on the line.
The most anticipated rematch in UFC history: Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje?
Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje met in 2018 when Poirier came out as the winner. this time, Gaethje is planning on handling things differently. The common thing that these two fighters have between them is that both of them lost their bouts against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Now, which fighter took away more from their bouts against each other and against Nurmagomedov? That will be the game-changer at UFC 291.
Alexander Volkanovski, whose recent loss came at the hands of Islam Makhachev, Nurmagomedov’s protege, knows what it might take to be a Lightweight champion. Therefore, his insight into the fight between Poirier and Gaethje comes with a fair bit of experience.
