Conor McGregor once held the reputation of the most fearsome fighter in the UFC; a reputation he undeniably earned through a stack of undeniable proof on his resume. ‘The Notorious’, while still retaining the title of the biggest name in the UFC, breaking records in terms of sales, and becoming the richest MMA fighter of all time, has seen his standing as an elite fighter potentially damaged over the last few years. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, McGregor’s journey in recent years has been anything but smooth sailing.
Amidst reports of the Irishman’s highly anticipated return to the octagon after a painfully long hiatus, the discussion surrounding McGregor’s prestige has been fervent. Holding a not-so-good record in his last few fights, questions have been raised about his ability to reclaim his former glory and regain his status as one of the top fighters in the world.
In the midst of these conversations, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has weighed in on the matter, drawing an interesting parallel between McGregor and the MMA legend Wanderlei Silva. The Brazilian fighter’s achievements include becoming the Pride Middleweight Champion. Additionally, he holds memorable victories over notable opponents such as Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Kazushi Sakuraba. Sonnen highlighted striking resemblances in their career trajectories, identifying disappointing similarities in certain phases of their respective journeys.

The uncanny similarity between Conor McGregor & Wanderlei Silva
Despite his remarkable success outside the cage, Conor McGregor’s recent performances have left much to be desired. Recently, ex-UFC fighter Chael Sonnen weighed in on the matter after Jake Paul boldly claimed he could beat ‘The Notorious’. Sonnen delved deep into the frequent call-outs McGregor has been receiving, highlighting a notable change from a couple of years ago. This parallel is reminiscent of Sonnen’s observations about Wanderlei Silva.
Sonnen expressed his disapproval, stating, “There is a similarity to Conor McGregor and Wanderlei Silva. And that, I don’t like.”
The 46-year-old elaborated, noting, “There was a period of time Wanderlei Silva was the most frightening person. Not only was he the best. Not only was he going to whip you. It was frightening that you were gonna have to get in there with him. Fans that were watching were frightened at what they were about to see. It is where he earned the moniker, ‘The Axe Murderer’.”
Furthermore, Sonnen highlighted how both McGregor and Silva faced setbacks that altered their trajectory and dimmed their once-dazzling star power. During their prime, nobody dared to call them out. However, as time passed and their decline became apparent, the calls for fights against them multiplied.

Sonnen specifically addressed McGregor, stating, “If you go back to that time frame, Conor McGregor was called out by nobody… Asking to have the Conor McGregor fight is not in the same category as calling him out. What Jake Paul did today is call him out. He said I am going to bleep the bleeping bleep out of him. There was a period of Conor’s career, where he was untouchable [when] nobody said that.”
Since his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, followed by his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and most recently, two consecutive losses against Dustin Poirier, McGregor has experienced a decline. With a record of 1-3 since 2018, the Irishman’s once-shining star seems to have lost its luster.
