UFC’s renowned commentator and popular podcast host, Joe Rogan, isn’t just a popular voice. The 55-year-old also has an extensive martial arts background, which he claims instilled discipline in him. The famous podcast host recently brought up the discussion involving certain people with martial arts backgrounds, especially actor Steven Seagal, who was one of the biggest box office superstars during the first half of the 90s. He would follow the similar path of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris and star in outrageous action movies. Seagal was famous for displaying martial arts action in his movies.

Comedian Ryan Long joined Joe Rogan in episode #1944 of the latter’s million-dollar podcast. They discussed Steven Seagal’s martial arts background. Rogan mentioned that the actor was an expert in aikido. It is a form of martial arts that originated in Japan. However, the JRE host also talks about how this kind of martial art is not really that effective. Let us see what the famous podcast host had to say.
Joe Rogan talks about Steven Seagal’s aikido expertise
Ryan Long pulled out a question to Rogan regarding Steven Seagal’s level of skill in martial arts. The 55-year-old answered, saying, “He’s [Steven Seagal] really good at aikido …he was very talented.” Seagal ran aikido in Japan, according to Rogan. “He was deep into the culture. He was really good at aikido,” said Rogan. The UFC commentator then proceeded to talk about what kind of martial arts aikido was.

The former Fear Factor host said, “Aikido is a martial art that was developed to disarm people with swords..” He added, “It’s kind of a reactive martial art …it’s not like offensive.” In the movies, Seagal turned aikido into an offensive weapon despite its defensive nature.

“What he did in the movies, he made it offensive,” said the JRE host. He also added that aikido is one of the least effective martial arts in the world. “It’s [aikido] just not that effective martial art in real practice.” Explained Rogan.

Rogan even said that aikido fighters cannot compete with someone who wrestles. He said, “In real practice, a wrestler is gonna take an aikido guy down, like a hundred percent.” Ryan Long even mentioned nobody has witnessed an aikido fighter win any major MMA championships. But Rogan claims that someone may start off with aikido and eventually find themselves practicing different martial arts.
