Jorge Masvidal vs. Colby Covington was probably one of the biggest fights of 2022 already. The storyline, the pre-fight hype, the trash-talking — everything was on point. At UFC 272, the two former buddies and training partners-turned-heated rivals settled scores in the octagon. ‘Chaos’ came out victorious via unanimous decision after five engrossing rounds.
The deciding factor during the fight turned out to be Covington’s extreme cardio routine, stamina, and wrestling prowess. Masvidal tried to keep the fight on the feet for as long as possible but ended up on the canvas as ‘Chaos’ dominated the fight.
Many Masvidal fans credited the loss to a visible difference in both fighters’ wrestling ability. In fact, locker room footage from after the fight showed his staff reiterating the same thing.

Masvidal looked dejected as his team tried to cheer him up and give him confidence. One of his backroom staff told him, “He out-wrestled you, bro. He didn’t beat you. He out-wrestled you, man. You got the fight of the night. I’m telling you, you came to fight, he came to f***ing wrestle there’s a big difference dude. He tried to sit on you as long as he could, and that’s what happened.”
From the beginning of the fight, Covington established he was going to keep pushing till Masvidal’s stamina gave up. Even after the fight, ‘Gamebred’ looked exhausted, while Colby looked ready to carry on.
Interestingly, Covington not only dominated the fight with takedowns and grappling but also landed more strikes and significant strikes, too. This might shake the confidence of Masvidal, who himself admitted he got “out-wrestled” in the post-fight press conference.
