Did Daniel Cormier's criticism truly derail Derrick Lewis's career, or is it just an excuse?

Derrick Lewis attracted quite a bit of attention from the fighting community with his words for Daniel Cormier on UFC Edmonton media day. The duo have a rivalry that goes long back. The heavyweights even took their rivalry out onto the Octagon back in 2018, where DC won the UFC 230 main event via a submission. While the fighting community seemed to have believed that the beef was settled, that might not be the case. It had now found new blood as Lewis threw shade at Cormier!

During the press conference, a reporter asked ‘The Black Beast’ if he wanted to cross any fight off his list. And the response pointed at DC. He said, “He’s a piece of s—t scumbag, man. F—k DC.” When the reporter urged him to elaborate, he kept his answer a bit vague, saying, “He knows why. DC knows why. Everyone knows why- he disrespected Popeyes chicken, but other than that, he’s a piece of s—t.” Putting in a diss about a fast food chain confused the fighting community. And who else to call for rescue if not Cormier himself? Let’s see what DC had to say about Lewis’ diss.

What does Daniel Cormier think of Derrick Lewis’ callout?

Lewis’s words began circling making rounds on the internet and the famed MMA journalist, Ariel Helwani, happened to stumble upon a clip of Lewis just before he was wrapping up a session of his YouTube talk show. He wasted no time and called the former heavyweight champion to clarify if Lewis was actually upset with DC. Right after he dissed Cormier, ‘The Black Beast’ began talking about ‘Popeye’s Chicken’. This confused Helwani and many others. And DC seemed to be the only one who could clarify all doubts.

But even the UFC commentator and analyst was left in confusion. He said, “I don’t know, because I haven’t seen him for a while. But I was pretty hard on him about retiring, because he had lost a couple fights, and I was kind of telling the truth, and he seemed mad at me. But I haven’t seen him. But I’m going to see him this weekend and I’m going to ask him like, ‘Yo, are you mad at me?’”

Since Cormier didn’t see the clip from the media day, Helwani let him know what Lewis actually said. That was when DC began to doubt something ugly was beginning to develop between him and Lewis. He quoted, “There’s a little underlying, maybe. It sounds like it might be a little underlying, he might be a little p–sed at me, maybe, because of the way I talked about him.”

Have an interesting take?

There was a time when DC happened to claim that ‘The Black Beast’ didn’t look well enough in a fight. But the UFC commentator didn’t really remember about the details of the fight. However, the way Lewis knocked Rodrigo Nascimento out in his previous fight greatly impressed Cormier. DC came out clean and said that his opinions usually go with the fighters’ performances. Apart from that and of course, the ‘Popeyes’ Chicken’ diss, he didn’t have a scuffle with Lewis.

On top of that, Cormier announced that he had already settled his beef with Lewis back in 2018 with a fight. There was indeed no need for a rematch and reigniting the heat between them. But do you remember ‘The Black Beast’ once blamed the fight against Cormier for the fall in his career?

Derrick Lewis pointed out that the fight with Daniel Cormier changed everything for him

‘The Black Beast’ had a pretty impressive record before he injured his knee. But it all changed after he lost to DC. He went on to fight Junior dos Santos but lost again. Even though he went on a 4-fight win streak, he wasn’t quite the same as he was once before. He lost against Ciryl Gane, Tai Tuivasa, Sergei Pavlovich, and Serghei Spivak via finishes. Weighing in on his defeats back in 2021, he said, “The title shot that I had against DC, really changed everything. I mean I went to have knee surgery right after that fight and everything has been a 100% ever since.”

Now, Lewis is all set to face Jhonata Diniz at UFC Edmonton. Needless to say, Lewis looks up to gaining one more victory in his professional MMA record of 28 wins and 12 defeats. Whether he’d be able to do it or not, is something that the fight fans will know on 2nd November. But one thing is certain. With rising heat against DC, the UFC world would indeed dive into a bit more drama.

And as far as a rematch is concerned, it is highly unlikely for Cormier to land back inside the Octagon. He has been happily retired since 2020. With a successful career as a commentator, he won’t really look up to a fight. Even though the fight fans would urge him to climb back up, DC would probably stay adamant about his retirement.
