The UFC commentator Joe Rogan makes sure that he discusses a wide range of subjects in each episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. In the #1966 episode of JRE, the podcaster discussed the scariest effects actors face when they go through drastic body transformations. Even at the age of fifty-five, Rogan made sure that he followed a strict diet and workout regimen to keep his body fit and healthy. The UFC commentator is someone who is mindful of how a person treats their body.

Moreover, as a proponent of a healthy lifestyle, it is hard for Rogan to watch actors experiment with their bodies to transform themselves into movie characters. Even though it is their profession and passion, the former Fear Factor host hates the fact that actors are doing crazy stuff with their bodies. Being someone who has been receiving a lot of praise for his physique and lifestyle, Rogan is not ready to support the practices of actors that take them to the “death door.”

The UFC commentator was talking in the #1966 episode of JRE with stand-up comic Big Jay Oakerson. The two of them started talking about movies and the effort put in by some actors to transform their bodies to fit the character they are portraying. Rogan said, When McConaughey did ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, he got fucked up. Yeah, that hurt him. He had a hard time recovering from that. Like, you’re basically on death’s door. You’re letting your body eat itself. That’s what’s happening. People don’t realize how scary that is, like, for a person to do that for a movie… So crazy.”

Talking on a similar topic, Rogan added, “Like what ‘Homeboy’ did with ‘The Machinist’ Christian Bale. He got to the death door man, did you see that?… He was even worse than McConaughey did in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’… But he came and played Batman, like, six months later.” He continued “That image of him in ‘The Machinist’ like with his arms, are splayed like a bird… dude, he looks like he’s on death’s door like that. Looks like a person who’s been starved in a concentration camp.”

For the movie ‘Batman Begins’ (2005), Christian Bale just got six months after ‘The Machinist’ to bulk up to achieve a suitable body to play the role of Batman. The actor put his body through rigorous training and ended up putting on 100 pounds of muscle. Similarly, Matthew McConaughey lost around 50 pounds to fit into the character of Ron Woodroof.

McConaughey in JRE

The Interstellar star himself spoke on JRE in an episode aired on October 22, 2020, about the drastic measures he took to lose all the weight. McConaughey revealed to Rogan that he ate nothing but egg whites, fish, and tapioca pudding. The actor also revealed that taking up the movie was indeed the hardest choice. However, while playing the role of Woodroof, who was suffering from stage 4 HIV/AIDS in the mid-1980s, he wanted to make sure that he did justice to the character.
