The main event of UFC 291 featured a fight that could have gone either way. Nobody could have predicted who would have won the fight between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, right from the get-go. Poirier, who had won the previous fight and is generally known to be more calculative, was the choice for his teammate and retired UFC fighter, Jorge Masvidal.

Shocking the entire world, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje made quick work of Dustin Poirier with a head kick, shutting down the naysayers. The fight was for the BMF title and UFC’s first BMF, Jorge Masvidal passed on the belt to the newly crowned BMF of the promotion, Justin Gaethje. However, it seems Masvidal had to do away with more than his old title.

The last time he fought Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier won the fight after a gritty three rounds. This time, Jorge Masvidal thought, it would probably end up going the same way. He placed a considerable sum of money on Dustin Poirier, expecting him to win. At the end of the night, a disappointed and shocked Masvidal had $100,000 less to his name.

In a recent interview, Masvidal opened up on this when he was asked about his promotion. “Um, snap. Promoting all the time, working out when I get a chance, uh… making wagers that I probably shouldn’t. I put $100,000 on DP, on Dustin Poirier. Kids, I’m sorry. You’ve got to go to public school now.” It was recently shared on Twitter as well.

Masvidal and Poirier have been teammates at ATT for a long time. Both fighters hold each other in high regard and exemplify a brotherly bond. However, fans think the bad bet from Masvidal may have surprising consequences in the neat future.

A Jorge Masvidal Comeback? Fans react to Masvidal-Poirier shocker

When fans got wind that Masvidal had lost $100,000 because of a bad bet at UFC 291, they had varying reactions to the fiasco. A picture was Tweeted with the quote by Masvidal and the fans flocked to the comment section to let their opinions be known.

One fan was dead against the idea of betting on that fight because it was ‘too close’ while another was against betting in a fight game itself.

One fan reminded Masvidal that it’s a good way to go broke.

Another fan handed Masvidal a harsh reminder that he lost a few matches as well, thereby causing other people to lose money as well.

However, it seems that most of the fans expect Jorge Masvidal to return to the fight game, searching for a ‘big purse’.

People started predicting different fights for Masvidal to return for, including a fight against rival-turned-friend, Jake Paul.
