“It’s looking like summer in New Orleans is close to happening for my retirement fight. A pay-per-view in New Orleans this summer would be incredible. That’s what I’m pushing for. That’s what the UFC’s working toward…Lay the gloves down where it all started in Louisiana. It would be an honor for me,” said former 155lbs interim champion Dustin Poirier, as he hinted at his “uno mas, duo mas” earlier this month, signaling the end of his MMA career before hanging up his gloves.

Fans recognize Dustin Poirier as one of the sport’s most respected fighters—one who may not have captured the elusive title but is undeniably among the elite, a distinction few have earned. Since announcing his “last dance,” ‘The Diamond’ has kept fans eagerly speculating about who his next opponent will be. Several big names like Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, and Justin Gaethje have been tossed around. However, the conversation recently took an interesting turn on UFC legend Michael Bisping’s podcast, ‘Believe You Me,’ on YouTube. Against all odds, Bisping suggested a potential showdown with the former welterweight interim champion Colby Covington, calling it a “great fight.”

Furthermore, ‘The Count’, emphasizing the similarity in age between the two, said to his co-host Paul Felder, “Perennial contender at welterweight, grudge match, big name—Colby Covington at the end of his career as well, respectfully. You know, I think it makes sense. Of course, Colby’s going to be a little bigger being a welterweight, but Dustin is probably not that much smaller. He wouldn’t have to cut weight, he could take more damage, his chin would be better, and he’d be a little bit stronger. Two big stars, big names, pay-per-view.”

Michael Bisping clearly has a sharp eye for matchmaking, and the prospect of a Colby Covington vs. Dustin Poirier fight is one that could captivate fans. ‘Chaos’, infamous for his ‘heel’ persona in the UFC, has a complicated history with the Louisiana native. The two were once training partners at American Top Team in Florida, but their relationship soured when Covington was expelled from the gym due to his trash-talking behavior towards fellow fighters, including Poirier, Jorge Masvidal, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Now that the Clovis native is back in the spotlight, what are the attitudes of  ‘The Diamond’ and Covington toward each other? Do they want to face off in the Octagon? Let’s take a closer look.

Do Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier want to fight each other?

The callout from Colby Covington began after his UFC 272 win in 2022, following his non-title fight against Jorge Masvidal. In his post-fight interview, ‘Chaos’ made it clear that he was targeting Dustin Poirier. However, the Louisiana native quickly dismissed the idea, stating, “I’ll never fight Colby in an Octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. He’s not making money off my career and what I’ve done. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC.”

Fast forward to 2024, Dustin Poirier teased the possibility of one final fight after UFC 302, prompting fans and analysts to speculate about a potential matchup with Colby Covington. However, ‘The Diamond’, with his pointed remarks, has made it clear that he’s not interested in facing Covington. The Clovis native, though, hasn’t backed down. Just yesterday, he issued a statement on his YouTube channel, saying, “No word on the Dustin fight. He’s been scared of my shadow for years, ever since we trained together at that old gym. He knows exactly what I bring to the table. He knows he can’t beat me…Dustin won’t even try. He’ll go into retirement knowing I’ve got his soul, and that he never defended his family’s honor or legacy. So, Dustin’s a little cuck.”
