Adesanya was originally slated to fight Dricus Du Plessis, but the South African pulled out in order to recover from a shoulder injury. However, after Du Plessis pulled out, Adesanya pushed the UFC for #5 ranked middleweight Sean Strickland. Their ongoing feud is one of the main reasons Adesanya wanted Strickland. And when he came to know that Du Plessis will not be attending UFC 293, he was disappointed and called out the Praetorian for missing a huge opportunity.

In an interview with ‘TheMacLife’ on YouTube, Israel Adesanya was asked if he thought that ‘Stillknocks’ had missed out on a lucrative PR opportunity and having a confrontation at the event, thus building hype for their potential fight.
Adesanya agreed and called Du Plessis an “idiot”. He even jested that the South African could have called him ni*** to market the fight, which the interviewer pointed out Strickland might do. “He didn’t? I just assumed he did. Idiot. He could have jumped in there and called me a ni***, too” Stylebender said.
