Gaethje was featured in a YouTube Interview with the renowned channel TMZ Sports. He was surely not on the fence while expressing what he was actually aiming for. He mentioned the likes of Islam Makhachev and his guru, Khabib Nurmagomedov, as his quarry.
When he was asked, “Is Islam the guy you want when you get to fight for the title again?” He replied without flip-flopping, “Yeah – absolutely! I mean this will be two opportunities to kind of get my losses back. Khabib beat me – you know, Islam is kind of his prodigy. So I can kind of get that fight back a little bit – you know he’d beat Oliveira, so I can certainly get a two-for-one deal on that one. You know this chance I got right now is to get my first loss or second loss back.”
It’s evident from the video how ‘The Highlight’ is aiming to fight Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title. Since Khabib Nurmagomedov has been the trainer behind Makhachev, Gaethje has also targeted Nurmagomedov considering it a two-for-one deal. He undoubtedly thinks back to the famous match versus Nurmagomedov that he participated in but ultimately lost.

Back in 2020, at UFC 254, Justin Gaethje, who many predicted would be Nurmagomedov’s biggest test, was submitted by one of the greatest fighters in the history of mixed martial arts.
