Gordon Ryan recently suffered a rib injury while training, specifically during back escapes. Despite attempting to continue training, both he and his team decided it was best to reschedule his upcoming matches. He revealed, “A few days ago in training, I was performing back escapes and badly popped my rib during a misdirectional escape.”
In the post shared on Instagram, he explained, “In other words, I won’t be competing until next year, but I will be at the events to see all my amazing supporters and coach my team. Sorry, everyone, this is just part of the game.”
A popped rib, also known as the slipping rib or Cyriax syndrome, occurs when false ribs shift out of their usual position. This musculoskeletal condition, often underdiagnosed, can pose challenges to maintaining physical activity. A popped rib occurs when the cartilage attached to false ribs breaks, which can lead to abnormal movement and result in pain in the upper abdomen or lower chest.

Due to the indirect connection to the sternum, the 8th, 9th, and 10th ribs are susceptible to excess movement, making them prone to slipping. Athletes in contact sports, like grappling in the case of Ryan, are more likely to experience this condition.
