Is Joe Rogan right about MMA needing a major overhaul, or is Dana White's vision still valid?

56-year-old Joe Rogan time and again comes up with multiple suggestions to make the sport of MMA even more interesting. He first pointed out how the fighters are using the UFC cage during a fight and advised that the fights should take place on an open mat. Rogan also emphasized on the importance of ground control and how the fight should begin from the same position as the last round.

None of these changes have been implemented and he has now come up with a new suggestion. He invited Khalil Rountree Jr. on his JRE MMA Show (#161) show and pointed out the change he wants in the UFC next.

The UFC color commentator is one the longest-serving members of the promotion and has good knowledge of the sport. However, he has time and again tried to help the UFC with his unique suggestions. This time the biggest cause of concern for him is the weight classes. While speaking to Rogan, Rountre Jr. pointed out the difficulties most professional fighters face in making weight. The JRE host agreed to the fact that it is indeed risky for the fighters as they may face health issues in the long run. But it seems the 56-year-old has the solution to it.

According to the JRE host, the UFC should bring in more weight classes. While speaking to the 34-year-old he said, “I think there should be way more weight classes. I really really do. I think there should be one every 10 pounds minimum.” He further pointed out how boxing has 17 weight classes and the UFC should also include more to help the fighters.

He further added, “Look at boxing. There’s a reason why there’s a 147 and a 154 and a 160. It’s because there is really a difference legitimate in their prime 154 and a 160.” In the UFC fighters have to make a massive cut in different divisions which can hamper their performance. Not only do they lose their power but also enter dehydrated into their fights.

Rogan further said, “when you get a gap like 85 to 205 that’s crazy. That’s too big and then another 25 pounds. I mean you know 205 to 265 is nuts.” The middleweight guest responded, explaining how he cuts weight for his fights. Rountree Jr. cuts around 20-25lbs to make the light heavyweight limit. He explained how he eats the same amount of food during the weight cut, but simply increases the intensity of his training to lose the weight.

However, both Rogan and Rountree Jr. agreed that weight cutting should be illegal, stating how it did not do anyone any favors and depleted a fighter before a fight. Rogan expressed similar sentiments during JRE #2036 with Kurt Angle.

This is not the only problem that the JRE host has with the UFC. While speaking to the light heavyweight contender he shared his honest opinion about the pay structure in the promotion.

One of the biggest causes of concern for most UFC fighters is the amount of money they are being paid. UFC CEO Dana White has often been criticized for underpaying his fighters. If we compare the amounts to boxing or wrestling the fighters earn just a fraction of the amount the promotion makes.

Many former fighters have come out and shown their disapproval towards it. Some have even left the promotion just to earn better. It now seems that the JRE host also wants some major changes in the pay structure. Joe Rogan while speaking to Rountree Jr. pointed out that weight cutting is the biggest cause of concern for him at the moment.

However, he did take out time to show his support towards the fighters in the UFC. The 56-year-old said, “I think if the UFC was going to do anything differently that would be the first one I would say. The second one that I would say pay structure for sure.” Rogan believes that the fighters should definitely be getting a lot more than what they are earning.

However, he also made it clear that he doesn’t like win bonuses and said, “They should be getting more money. Also, I don’t like the win bonus.” On most occasions, the result of the fight may vary because of an error in judgment which results in the loss of payment for the loser feels Rogan.

Even the light heavyweight contender agreed to the fact but it seems not much can be done about it. The JRE host has once again come up with his unique solutions just like he does most times. However, the question arises: should they be implemented next? Let us know about it in the comments below.
