Back in September 2021, Conor McGregor received a key to the city of Miami from Mayor Francis Suarez. The Irishman had shared the happy news via social media and has since been a supporter of Suarez. Funnily enough, McGregor had some classic McGregor moments prior to the ceremony. The Miami Mayor recently revealed some interesting events that happened behind the scenes before McGregor received the key.

Francis Suarez appeared on the Fullsend Podcast earlier this month. The 45-year-old discussed some politics in addition to reminiscing about his encounter with McGregor. ‘The Notorious’ had appeared on the ‘Cafecito Talk’ with Suarez and he had left disappointed, as Suarez later learned.

The Mayor recollected the entire story of McGregor getting the key to the city and getting a glimpse of the former UFC double champion’s mentality.

Francis Suarez recollects wild Conor McGregor story

During his appearance on the podcast, Francis Suarez recounted the actual events of Conor McGregor getting the key to Miami. He said, “Funny McGregor story. This is a true story too. He came in on a Friday. We did the podcast. His people were like ‘Oh he’s a little disappointed because he didn’t get the key to the city.'”

He continued, “I was like, ‘Okay well if he comes back on Monday, I’ll give him the key to the city.’ The guy showed up on Monday at 9 A.M. We brought him in through the side and there’s a spiral staircase.”

McGregor had broken his leg at UFC 264 in July 2021, so this was just a few months after the incident. He was still recovering and had to use a cane to help himself. Recounting this, Suarez continued, “Now, this guy had broken his tibia in the last fight. And my security detail was like, ‘Look man, we’re really sorry. We just are trying to protect you from the media whatever.'”

McGregor had a typical reply to the comments. Suarez quoted him saying, “He’s like ‘Sorry? I’m getting the key to the city.’ He goes ‘I would have rappelled into the building.'” While Suarez and the podcast hosts enjoyed the story, some of the fans did not.
