The UFC has witnessed some controversial judging in the past few months. Some examples that come to mind are the UFC 280 bantamweight bout between Sean O’Malley and Petr Yan, where ‘Sugar’ triumphed over the former divisional champion. The last PPV of 2022 also saw a questionable call when Paddy Pimblett beat Jared Gordon. This theme continued in the main event of the UFC’s latest Fight Night card and attracted UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns‘ attention.

The AT&T Center in San Antonio played host to a five-round war between Marlon Vera and ‘The Sandman’ Cory Sandhagen. At the end of the night, Bruce Buffer announced that two of the judges (Chris Lee and Sal D’Amato) scored in favor of ‘The Sandman‘ and one (Joel Ojeda) scored the contest in favor of ‘Chito’. It was this one judge’s scorecard that left MMA fans in confusion, with even Sandhagen looking a tad perplexed when it was read out. Taking these decisions into consideration, the #5 ranked UFC welterweight believes that an investigation is overdue.

Gilbert Burns, who is doing the media rounds ahead of his own return to the octagon against Jorge Masvidal, took some time to comment on the questionable decisions. In an interview, he mentioned that he wants the UFC to get the FBI to investigate the judges. This is because ‘Durinho’ believes that there might be a major factor behind these judges’ controversial decisions. What is it?

The former UFC welterweight title challenger said to TMZ, “I think those judges got to be investigated, you know.” He added, “We need FBI on these judges because those judges may be working with the betting company, may be doing something behind, getting a third person to bet… I think those guys are doing something crazy.”

Gilbert Burns is skeptical about the judge’s intentions behind the controversial decisions. He believes that they are trying to make some extra money out of these fights.

“I think those guys [judges] are being dirty and maybe trying to get some money out of these [fights],” said ‘Durinho’. He mentioned that he wanted Marlon Vera to win the fight against Cory Sandhagen, but he stated that ‘Chito’ clearly lost the fight at the home of the San Antonio Spurs.

‘Durinho’ expresses his anger at the continuous misjudgments in UFC fights

Gilbert Burns seems livid at the fact that this type of controversial judging is becoming rampant in the UFC. He said, “What bothers me is that [misjudgments] don’t stop. Every event happened, like, come on. We need to make a decision.”

Burns mentions that he knows that it isn’t the duty of the UFC to look into it, but he wants the Nevada State Athletic Commission to look into the matter.

“I know it’s not up to the UFC, but the commission [NSAC] will have to do something, otherwise it doesn’t. I don’t know. Nothing’s changed,” said the 5th-ranked UFC fighter.
