The most important yet hardest thing in sports is to know when to walk away. While most fighters like Anderson Silva or Chris Weidman stick around way too long for their own good, milking every last paycheck they can, Tony Ferguson has taken sticking around too long to a whole new level. After losing eight fights in a row in the UFC, and with fans and even Dana White begging the former interim champ to retire, Ferguson refused.
This made the promotion cut him from its roster this year. But no matter, ‘El Cucuy’ loves fighting too much, and signed with the newly minted Global Fight League (GFL), along with fellow UFC luminaries like Yoel Romero and Alexander Gustaffson among others. Now the former interim lightweight champion is set to face professional troll and part-time fighter, Dillon Danis, atop GFL 2 on May 25 at the ‘Shrine Auditorium and Expo Center’ in Los Angeles, California.
Of course, most fans think Ferguson shouldn’t be fighting anymore lest he get some (more) serious brain damage, while others, like former UFC heavyweight and podcaster Brendan Schaub, are supportive of ‘El Cucuy’ fighting Danis next month. “MMA is the perfect platform for him. Tony has some advantages, Dillon goes to the ground, has huge advantages, so,” Schaub said of their matchup on his ‘The Fighter and the Kid’ podcast with Bryan Callen.

“I hate seeing it personally,” Callen interjected, channeling the feelings of most fight and even Ferguson fans. To which Schaub revealed that the only reason he wants to see ‘El Cucuy’ back in action is to see him make some good money. “But I want to see him make $300,000 and he needs it, so I fully support it… 99% of the fighters you watch on TV can’t retire and they’re sad,” the former UFC heavyweight said.

Now, Schaub is claiming that the reason Ferguson is so hell-bent on fighting is that he ‘needs the money’. We do not know that for sure, but that may well be the case. Moreover, Schaub feels that despite his recent drop in form, there is hope for Ferguson in the GLF.

Brendan Schaub is hopeful Tony Ferguson will win as Dillon Danis warns ‘El Cucuy’
Brendan Schaub actually thinks that Tony Ferguson might just resurrect his career in the GFL and finally get a win. “And he might have some success in the GFL because you go from that to you know the UFC, like there’s no easy fights. Like ‘Oh he’s done.’ It’s like done as far as UFC is concerned, yes he’s done. He can’t compete at that level, but he can compete at this level,” Schaub added.

The UFC, after all, is the pinnacle of the sport. And even though ‘El Cucuy’ is on an eight-fight losing streak, the longest in the UFC, those losses did come at the hands of pretty good fighters for the most part. And with Ferguson set to face the 2-0 inexperienced Danis, there indeed may be a chance that the former UFC interim champ gets back in the win column.

Is Tony Ferguson's fighting spirit admirable, or is it time for him to hang up the gloves?

But that is not what Danis feels. In fact, the BJJ maestro has vowed to put a beating of such epic proportions on Ferguson that the legend will never be able to fight again. “I’m going to retire Tony Ferguson and bury ‘El Cucuy’ in the same grave as his win streak,” Danis said in a text message to ‘MMA Junkie’.
