What’s next for Sean Strickland? After beating Israel Adesanya in the striking game at UFC 293, he can have his pick from a tough pool of challengers. He can potentially face the winner of Khamzat Chimaev vs. Paulo Costa or have an immediate rematch with ‘Stylebender’, which has the backing of UFC President Dana White. But what about ‘Tarzan’ settling it like “men” with Dricus Du Plessis?

UFC 293 was supposed to be the South African fighter’s night, but he chose to sit out to cater to his foot injury. However, he couldn’t have anticipated an outcome where Strickland claimed the middleweight strap. This leaves ‘Stillknocks’ at an odd stop as the true African showdown with Adesanya seems derailed as of now and, along with it, his title shot. Despite this, Du Plessis believes he is “ready” to run it against the newly crowned champion.

The 29-year-old turned to his X-handle and in an amusing post declared, “Me & @SStricklandMMA had the biggest upsets of 2023 so let’s settle this like men I’m ready.”

Following this, he had some choice words for the former champion as he specified his desire to not face an “amateur” Adesanya that showed up on this Saturday. Interestingly, Strickland had also termed Adesanya’s outing at UFC 293 akin to an amateur. Further, the #1-ranked middleweight asked him to take some time off.

“After that @stylebender can get a hiding in Africa I don’t want to fight the amateur that fought on Sat I want to beat the best Adysanya, take some time and get your sh*t together first,” du Plessis added.

While Du Plessis holds the number one contender’s spot, his title shot is still not guaranteed. “You’ve taken your shot for granted… You don’t know the UFC. You don’t know how they twist and turn things,” Adesanya’s coach, Eugene Bareman, once cautioned Du Plessis during a recent chat with Submission Radio. And the UFC head honcho has something similar to say about it.

Du Plessis’s dwindling chances of at title shot

“I think you do the rematch,” White declared at the UFC 293 post-fight press conference. Thus, his statement indicates an inclination for an immediate rematch instead of handing Du Plessis his title shot. “I think that possibly they run it back,” Jamahal Hill resonated the same.

Hence, it can be argued that the UFC’s top brass is more in favor of a rematch. It appears Du Plessis might have to wait longer or even fight again to reclaim his title shot. What do you think of this post by UFC star Dricus Du Plessis? Do you believe he is next in line, or should there be an immediate rematch between Sean Strickland and Israel Adesanya?
