The UFC has always been a hotbed for intense rivalries, and the latest drama unfolding in the light heavyweight division is no exception. The rivalry between Hill and Pereira dates back to UFC 300, where ‘Poatan’ secured a spectacular first-round knockout to retain his 205lbs gold. With in-cage animosity already looming, their tension reignited after a fiery confrontation at the UFC PI and this quickly went viral on social media and reignited talk of a rematch.
According to the video, the incident began innocently enough, with Hill offering Pereira a fist bump. However, the situation escalated when Pereira tossed his gloves onto the floor, setting the stage for a heated exchange. Hill has been vocal about their rivalry since the defeat in April, including an infamous moment at UFC 307 where he was spotted yawning ringside during Pereira’s title defense against Khalil Rountree Jr., a subtle jab at the champion’s performance.
In a recent interview with James Lynch on his Bodog Canada podcast, Hill gave his side of the story, explaining what led to the altercation. “We had that Twitter exchange like a couple of days before. You know, I saw him at the PI, you know, and I was just like, I want to go up,” Hill recounted. What started as a lighthearted interaction quickly turned confrontational after a pointed remark from the Brazilian. “Then it kind of went from that to, ‘Oh, you still awake?” Hill elaborated on how things escalated. “The actual context behind that was the fact that I wasn’t knocked out. I got right back up, and I was still moving. I told him, ‘You can get knocked out for real, like sleep, not moving.’ And from there, he went on to grab the gloves, and then that whole little situation.”

This marked a rare instance where Pereira found himself involved in an altercation outside the Octagon. Known for his stoic demeanor and minimal engagement in trash-talking, ‘Poatan’ typically avoids such controversies. Reflecting on the incident, Pereira addressed the situation during an interview with MMA Junkie, stating, “Well, things happen. This is the first time it’s happened to me.” While Pereira’s reserved nature is well-documented, he offered his perspective on the altercation in a separate interview, providing his side of the story.

He explained, “Well, I was just minding my business, training at the PI, as I always do. I know Jamahal is the kind of guy who would do something like that, so he walks up to us saying this and that on Twitter. They started talking to each other, and I was translating at the time. Then, as Alex said, he put on the gloves and was ready to go. But then they broke it up, and that was that.”
While Hill is gearing up to face Jiri Prochazka at UFC 311, Pereira is eyeing a return to the Octagon by the end of March. For Hill, a victory at UFC 311 could set the stage for a highly-anticipated rematch against the Brazilian champion. However, if Hill falls short, Pereira might turn his focus elsewhere, potentially taking on a new challenger in his next title defense. What do you think? Will Hill get his rematch and a shot at redemption, or will Pereira chart a different path for his next fight? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
