How many men would it take to defeat a silverback gorilla—50, 100, or even a thousand? This wild debate has taken social media by storm, and even the UFC hasn’t dodged the stray punches from it. Just days ago, stars like Eddie Hall and Merab Dvalishvili weighed in with their takes. But has anyone actually faced a gorilla up close? Georges St-Pierre might be the only one who not only saw one but had a near-death encounter with the beast. As ‘GSP’ recounts his chilling experience, Kamaru Usman throws down a new challenge—for everyone watching.
While having a conversation with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo at Pound-4-Pound, the former two-division champion shared his story when he confronted a Silverback Gorilla on his trip to Rwanda. “I actually got chased by a silverback gorilla. I was in Rwanda—I did gorilla trekking. He looked at me, he came, he went towards me. I got out of the way and I put my knees on the floor like this, and I was like, “Man, please, please, please…”
For those who don’t know, an average silverback gorilla stands about 5 feet seven inches tall and weighs between 300 and 485 pounds, with an arm span reaching up to 8 feet. Packed with muscles and power, these beasts of a creature have enough power to take down many professional fighters at once. When Georges St-Pierre saw the gorilla up close, all he could do was pray that the creature wouldn’t hurt him—because there was nothing he could do to hurt it.

‘GSP’ then added, “Then I looked—he’s not in front of me. I looked behind, and I see him. He had his back like this, and you look under and—man, I’m gonna tell you something—I was like this… When you look up on TV at a gorilla, and then you see one live, it’s very different. I could see his muscle definition through his fur. Then the guide gave me his hand and he told me that the reason why he turned his back on me was because he wanted to show me how much not of a threat I was to him.”
A hundred men versus one gorilla might sound exciting in theory, but in reality, it would be a suicide mission for anyone foolish enough to attempt it. Interestingly, Kamaru Usman has a challenge for all of those people who want to try their luck against an actual gorilla. GSP’s statement was shared by the Pound-4-Pound Instagram handle, and in the comment section, it was Usman who issued a challenge to the fans, “Which 10-15 of yall are willing to go first and sacrifice yourselves??? Exactly case closed!!”

There is an argument that 100 men could take down an actual gorilla, but then we’d lose at least 15 to 20 of those men if the fight actually went down. Since this is a trending topic in the fight community, ‘GSP’ was not the only one who chimed in on the gorilla vs. human conversation. Let’s have a look at what the other fighters have to say on this topic.

Merab Dvalishvili, Cory Sandhagen, and Conor McGregor go deep down on the gorilla vs. human debate
“On behalf of gorillas, I’d smoke a 100 easy,” said Conor McGregor about the debate. Why is he referring to himself as a gorilla? Well, that’s due to the fact that he has a gorilla tattoo on his chest. When asked about the debate to Cory Sandhagen, the bantamweight contender, was perplexed about the question; however, he gave his detailed analysis of the fight, stating, “I definitely would need a hundred of me. But a hundred is kind of a lot. I don’t know how we would win. My go-to would probably be a bunch of [them] trying to kick him in the nuts as many times as I could and then probably poke him in the eye.”

What’s your perspective on:
Could 100 UFC fighters really take down a silverback gorilla, or is it pure fantasy?
Have an interesting take?
He further added, “Everything that I could do that would be illegal in a fight, I’d probably try to do to the gorilla, and hopefully he wouldn’t rip and kill too many of myselves.” When asked about the fight with the bantamweight champion, Merab Dvalishvili, he stated, “1 gorilla? That’s easy, bro. I’m smart, I’m strong, I’m training every day. Shoot, take him down, easy. I think I can take 1 gorilla.”
The fact that ‘The Machine’ fancies his chances against a gorilla speaks to the type of fighter he is. Still, him actually being able to best a gorilla in hand-to-hand combat is a stretch, and deep down, even he knows that. What do you think of this raging debate? 100 men or 1 gorilla? What about George St-Pierre’s totally non-hypothetical, actual encounter with a silverback? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
