Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards have some unresolved business between them. Their rivalry came to the forefront after the infamous ‘three-piece and a soda’ incident in London. This was also one of the many viral moments that launched Masvidal to superstardom in 2019, alongside his 5-second KO of Ben Askren and BMF title win over Nate Diaz. A cause of bad blood between the pair since then, Masvidal is surprisingly rooting for Edwards at the moment.
For those unfamiliar, Masvidal and Edwards had a confrontation backstage at UFC’s Fight Night 147 event in London. During the encounter, Masvidal landed a flurry of sucker punches on Leon Edwards moments after knocking out Darren Till. Even though the two men never met in the octagon, the incident ensured a rivalry that mostly stayed virtual. But what’s changed that Masvidal is taking a U-turn and rooting for his former nemesis?
Jorge Masvidal finds himself rooting for Leon Edwards
In one of his recent interviews, Jorge Masvidal has expressed his support for Leon Edwards in his upcoming matchup against Colby Covington. The said statement came during the former UFC BMF champion’s latest appearance at ‘MMA Mania’. ‘Street Jesus’ had joined the interview to talk about the upcoming event of his venture Gamebred FC. But amid the conversation, the interviewer asked Masvidal’s pick for the upcoming UFC welterweight championship match. The former BMF’s response was bound to surprise a few.
To this, ‘Gamebred’ replied, “I can’t stand Colby for the life of me. I got nothing personal against him. He just crossed that line that day, so I had to check his ass, you know, but other than that, I mean, I really give a [ __ ] less, bro. Whoever wins, wins. Whoever loses, loses. I’m cheering for Leon, though. I’m cheering for Leon.”
Just like Edwards, Colby Covington, too, has bad blood with Jorge Masvidal. But unlike ‘Rocky’, The Miami native has gone five rounds against Covington inside the octagon and allegedly a few more outside a restaurant in Miami. While Covington triumphed inside the ring, beating Masvidal with a unanimous decision, Masivdal reportedly got the edge outside- something that landed him in jail. It was a strange turn of events for men who used to be friends and training partners.
A history of bad blood between the two UFC welterweights
The beef between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal is not news anymore. However, before all the bad blood, the two men actually used to be friends and training partners at American Top Team. But things took a sour turn when Covington embraced his ‘heel’ persona and became a vocal supporter of Donald Trump. Later in 2020, after ‘Chaos’ quit ATT, ‘Gamebred’ alleged that Covington still owed some money to one of his coaches.
A final straw came during the press conference of their UFC 272. During the event, the former NCAA wrestler made several remarks about Masvidal and his family. For this, Masvidal retaliated with his own allegations in one of the most heated UFC press conferences ever.
Fast forward to 2023, the Miami native is now busy with his new role as a fight promoter while Covington continues to chase the UFC gold. But despite their different paths, it doesn’t look like things have improved between the two.
