The UFC welterweight division could be easily dubbed the most entertaining one in the promotion right now. With contenders lining up, all trying to earn a shot at the title currently held by Leon Edwards, the matchmakers would be rubbing their hands at the potential fights they could set up. And one of the biggest names involved here would be the former champ, Kamaru Usman. Having lost twice to Edwards, the 35-year-old will be looking for any opportunity to prove that he still belongs at the top of the division. While he surely does belong, there’s no denying that the busy line of contenders poses a serious threat to his position and rank in the welterweight division.

One fighter who could have served as a challenge for ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is Shavkat Rakhmonov. Owing to his phenomenal performances, recently a fight between Usman and ‘Nomad’ was touted on social media platforms. While it is an exciting match-up, reports around the fight were not official yet. Following this turn of events, Rakhmonov’s manager gave a crucial update on the news; which was relayed to the public by another established MMA journalist.

After rumors started circulating of a fight between Usman and Rakhmonov, excitement among fans clearly went a notch up. But unfortunately, this thrill came crashing down just a few hours later; as media outlets on Twitter released a set of fresh new updates about the fight.

As per MMA Reporter Alex Behunin, Danny Rubenstein, manager to the Kazakh fighter, reached out to him personally denying the earlier rumors. Shutting down the earlier reports, Behunin tweeted, “The reports about Kamaru Usman vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov being worked on are completely false, Shavkat’s manager Danny Rubenstein tells me.”

Another update sent out by a prominent outlet too confirmed the news as false in a now-deleted tweet.

It’s not surprising considering that Rakhmonov has a few other options on his plate. The most recent one was the Belal Muhammad fight, which even UFC president Dana White had suggested as the next one for the sixth rank welterweight.

Rakhmonov is also rumored to face Belal Muhammad

A fight against ‘Remember The Name’ was initially suggested by Dana White during one of the media days at UFC 286. Considering that both are ranked very close to each other, it does sound like a solid match-up for the division.

Apart from this announcement, an online back-and-forth between Rakhmonov and Khamzat Chimaev also added fuel to fire about a possible bout between the two stars. Although an interesting fight, Chimaev’s weight-cut issues might end up playing a spoiler.
