Colby Covington‘s beef with Islam Makhachev may have proven entertaining. But is it realistic? There are several ways of looking at it. Firstly, we have seen matches where a champion moves to another division to step up and challenge another champion. Just like Alexander Volkanovski did against Makhachev in the past. However, is the fight worth it?

UFC’s #3 ranked welterweight doesn’t really put his money on the fight. Covington is as brilliant as they come when it comes to talking trash. However, will his threats and taunts really provoke Dana White and Co., enough to actually announce a fight? Here’s what Belal Muhammad thinks about it all.

Islam Makhachev and Covington fight isn’t happening anytime soon

Recently, Belal Muhammad appeared for an interview with MMA Junkie. The fighter opened up about a lot of things and expressed his interest in fighting the champion himself, Leon Edwards. He was later asked about Colby Covington’s wishes to fight against the lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev.

Covington has previously said “He (Makhachev) ain’t really going to come out here and fight,” the fighter had also expressed a lot of confidence in the American style of grappling against the Dagestani. Makhachev had later responded by simply calling the fight “easy money.”

Clearly, both the fighters are confident that they can take each other out but that’s just part of the persona. It kind of loses its purpose if the fight actually never gets a date and contract. And that’s exactly how Muhammad puts it out there. He didn’t think that the UFC would make it happen so early.

“Somebody calls you out you’re going to respond,” started Muhammad.“Like I said that’s what Colby’s doing, he’s trying to get a response because he knows it’s going to make headlines. I think for Islam it’s like he still has a lot of fights that could be next for him at 155 . . . I don’t even think the UFC would even look at that fight obviously it would be a huge fight but I don’t think they would book that fight so soon.”

The fighter makes a lot of sense. Makhachev is due to fight Charles Oliveira about a year after he took his title from him. Oliveira is obviously looking to reclaim the belt and Makhachev isn’t going to make it an easy fight. It’d be most bizarre for the UFC to announce a fight with Covington so soon after this main event. Meanwhile, Covington has his own things to deal with.

What’s next for Covington?

Colby Covington is about to step inside the Octagon with one of the best contemporary welterweights. Leon Edwards has gone undefeated for eight years and has a winning streak of 12 fights straight. And fans can be certain that he’s looking to make it 13 with Covington.

As usual, ‘Chaos’ has stuck true to his name and nature and talked a lot of trash about ‘Rocky’. In fact, he’s even gone after the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Makhachev as mentioned earlier. He’s accused the latter of fighting midgets” in his weight division.

This slur attracted a lot of negative attention from all of Makhachev’s supporters and Team Khabib. Now, Covington has one chance of putting a bite to his bark. Will he be able to win against Edwards? If he realistically hopes to fight Makhachev someday, this win would mean the world to him.
