The former UFC Flyweight Champion is now fighting in ONE Championship. Demetrious Johnson is going to fight against ONE Flyweight Champion Adriano Moraes at ONE on TNT 1 on April 7th, 2021.

Even before ‘Mighty Mouse’ face Moraes, he fought in the ONE Flyweight Grand Prix and became the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion.

Demetrious Johnson grew up in harsh situations

Johnson had a very harsh childhood. He grew up with his deaf mother and his stepfather, who was in the military. The craziest thing about his childhood was, he was unaware that his mother is deaf until he grew up and found out later.

Even though Johnson’s mother was deaf, she did everything she could as a single mother to give him a good life. As his stepfather was in the military, he was usually away.

Johnson used to compete in the bantamweight division

Before huge promotions in MMA, such as UFC, introduced the new flyweight division and adapted to it, Johnson used to compete in the bantamweight division.

He used to fight against fighters who were bigger than him. His first 16 professional fights were in the bantamweight division. The crazy fact about this is, even though he fought against fighters who were bigger than him, he still had a spectacular record of 14-2 for his first 16 pro fights.

After this, when the flyweight division got introduced, he could fight in his natural weight class.

‘Mighty Mouse’ the origin of Demetrious Johnson’s nickname

In an interview with EssentiallySports, when he was asked about the inspiration behind his nickname, Johnson revealed the origin of his nickname ‘Mighty Mouse’.

He said, “Well, my nickname was ‘Black Ice’ because I was slick and nobody liked it. And then my coach gave me the nickname ‘Mighty Mouse’ with my structure, skin tone, ears”.

He also said the nickname ‘Mighty Mouse’ just worked out for him because he loves superheroes. To explain it further, he talked about his old coaches and friends calling him ‘Mighty Mouse’. Then he just came in for a fight as ‘Mighty Mouse’ and it just stuck.

Demetrious Johnson professional records as an MMA athlete

When the UFC introduced the flyweight division in 2012, Johnson could finally fight in his natural weight class. He was the first UFC Flyweight Champion. From 2012 to 2017, he was the only fighter to hold the UFC Flyweight title.

He also holds a record of the most successful title defense in the history of UFC. He has successfully defended his UFC Flyweight title 11 times, breaking Anderson Silva’s record of 10 successful title defenses.

Johnson also has the most wins in UFC Flyweight history (13 wins) and the longest winning streak in the division, 13 fights winning streak.

He has also won the Flyweight gold in ONE Championship. He took part in ONE Flyweight Grand Prix tournament and became the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion.
