However, Charles Oliveira is set to defend his lightweight title for the first time. He will take on the #1 contender Dustin Poirier inside the UFC cage on 11th December at UFC 269.
This much anticipated 155lbs title fight will headline the event. So as the Brazilian champion prepares for his title defense, here we take a look at some of his best finishes in the UFC.
Charles Oliveira Back to the Win Column
After a two-fight skid in 2016, ‘Do Bronx’ made his way back to the win column with a stunning first-round submission win at UFC 210. He also won his third ‘Performance Of The Night’ bonus at the event. He comfortably beat Will Brooks at UFC 210 with a rear-naked choke.
Unfortunately, in his next fight at UFC 218, Oliveira faced a devastating knockout defeat at the hands of Paul Felder. From 2016 to 2017, Charles won only one fight.
In the next year, he was set against Clay Guida. Interestingly, ‘Do Bronx’ took only 2:18 minutes of the first round to finish Guida with a Guillotine Choke and was back to the win column at UFC 225.
Three Fight Win Streak
Following his stunning comeback at UFC 225, ‘Do Bronx’ further defeated Christos Giagos in 2018 in the second round of the fight. He won yet another ‘Performance Of The Night’ bonus for his win.
The Brazilian was now on a two-fight undefeated streak. For his third UFC bout in 2018, Oliviera faced one of the best lightweight fighters in the promotion, Jim Miller. The latter was fresh from his previous first-round submission win.
However, Oliviera looked very confident in the bout. After a failed lower kick attempt by ‘A-10,’ the Brazilian quickly landed a strong takedown and took him to the mat, transitioning into a vicious Rear Naked Choke. ‘A-10’ was submitted within the 1:15 minute of the round. This win marked Oliviera’s third victory in a row.
11th First Round Win in UFC
The MMA fight veteran has numerous records under his name. He also won many bonuses in his UFC career for his performances. Until 2019, ‘Do Bronx’ had finished 1o of his opponents in the first round. Interestingly, he surpassed his own record.
Charles Oliveira, for his third UFC bout in 2019, faced Jared Gordon inside the cage. The latter was fresh from his win over Dan Moret. ‘Do Bronx’ opened up the fight right after the first bell.
However, Gordon was retaliating and moving forward toward his opponent. Until he wobbled in the second minute after Oliveira hit him with a strong right.
The latter continued the punches and sent Gordon to the mat, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 1:26. This was Oliviera’s 11th first-round victory in UFC.
‘Do Bronx’ Delivers a Stunning Performance at UFC Fight Night 170
Coming into the fight, the now reigning lightweight champion Oliviera had 13 submission wins under his name. Furthermore, he was on a six-fight undefeated streak when he faced Kevin Lee in 2020.
On the other hand, Kevin Lee, after a two-fight skid, bounced back into the win column by defeating Gregor Gillespie before this fight. Both the lightweight combatants headlined the event.
Interestingly, ‘Do Bronx’ was dominating the fight with his vicious strikes. However, Lee took it to the third round. But Oliviera had his moment quickly in that round.
After a failed takedown attempt, the Brazilian caught Lee in a vicious Guillotine Choke. The fight ended within thirty seconds of the third round. This was Oliviera’s seventh straight win, which took him a step closer to the lightweight gold.
Conquering the UFC Lightweight Crown
Even though ‘Do Bronx’ had an impressive UFC career under his name, he was yet to lay his hands on the UFC gold. However, after a stunning unanimous win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 256, Oliviera earned his first-ever shot at the title.
The former champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, vacated the belt after a successful win over Justin Gaethje. Hence, UFC set up a lightweight title fight between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira at UFC 262.
