Is Jon Jones dodging Tom Aspinall, or is it just smart strategy from the veteran?

In the world of MMA, the biggest fights are often determined as much by timing as by skill and merit. One such brewing rivalry has caught the attention of fans and fighters alike: Tom Aspinall, the surging heavyweight star, versus Jon Jones, a legend whose dominance spans generations. While Aspinall has openly expressed his desire to face Jones, the question lingering in the air is whether Jones has been deliberately avoiding the matchup.

Aspinall’s rapid rise through the heavyweight ranks, capped by his stunning performances, has made him an undeniable contender. Yet, despite his respectful callouts, Jones remains silent. But why do the most people out there want to see this fight? It seems Michael Bisping has the answer for you.

Jones’ vehement opposition to facing Tom Aspinall, according to the heavyweight champion, stems from the fact that the Englishman hasn’t accomplished much to deserve a match-up with him. Fans think this is a classic case of the established veteran ducking the dangerous newcomer. Michael Bisping has another opinion, however. The former UFC champion believes Jones is looking to fight an opponent whom he can beat in Alex Pereira.

“My only issue is as a man, as a fighter, is him saying he doesn’t have the obligation to fight these young up-and-coming hungry dangerous guys that have an ability to beat him. I don’t get that. That’s what my problem is with Jake Paul – fighting guys that he knows he can beat.”, said Michael Bisping to Paul ‘The Irish Dragon’ Felder. ‘The Count’ feels Jones will find it easy against Pereira but he as a fan wants to see him take on Aspinall.

Bisping further added, “[With] Alex Pereira, he has a very blatantly obvious path to victory. He just took down Stipe. He took down Ciryl Gane. He will take down Alex Pereira. Would he be able to take down Tom? That’s the question. That’s the fight that’s what we want to see.” Tom Aspinall was present at Madison Square Garden on November 16th and watched the UFC 390 headliner live. After the fight, he pointed out that he had found some flaws in Jon Jones‘ game and could beat him. However, Daniel Cormier who has a history with Jones feels the champion will be a problem for everyone in the division.

Daniel Cormier warns the heavyweight division after Jones’s UFC 309 victory

Few rivalries in MMA history are as intense and personal as the one between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. What began as a friend jibe from Jones towards Cormier quickly escalated into a bitter feud. Their rivalry was marked by their polarizing personalities, vicious trash talk, and unforgettable throw-downs inside the Octagon. Regardless of their rivalry, Cormier has regularly tipped his hat to Jones’s skill set, and UFC 309 just affirmed Cormier’s acknowledgment of Jones’ skills.

“Dude, he’s very good and it really did show me, Chael, that heavyweights are going to struggle with him. When I fought Jon Jones I anticipated all these things because I had seen it. Plus I saw it from other guys that I fought. Well, Jones [is dangerous] with all those weapons the front kicks and the leg kicks the spinning kicks the knees. Bro, he had Stipe a step behind from the moment they walked into the Octagon.”, said ‘DC’ to Chael Sonnen on the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ podcast.

Jon Jones always had the skillset but many people questioned them with his move to the heavyweight division. Cormier feels Jones can now use his skills to destroy anyone in the division. While Aspinall does have the power and speed, ‘DC’ feels ‘Bones’ will be a tough outing for him, regardless of whether he beats the heavyweight champion or not.

Is it a strategic move, allowing Jon Jones to bide his time and carefully select his next opponent? Or does Aspinall’s speed, youth, and versatility pose a challenge Jones would rather avoid? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
