Did Khabib retire for family, or was it a strategic move to boost Makhachev's career?

Back in 2020, when the world was struggling with COVID-19, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov left the MMA realm in a frenzy when he suddenly announced his decision to retire from the sport. This raised many gasps and doubts about why he made such a choice. ‘The Eagle’ spoke to Joe Rogan right after the bout at UFC 254, citing his father’s tragic passing as the reason for hanging up his gloves while also promising his mother to not enter the cage again.

There was also another rumor that sparked swiftly: Nurmagomedov retired to make way for his teammate Islam Makhachev, who was just beginning to rise in the lightweight division at that time. This theory gained traction after Makhachev’s recent interview with ‘Match TV’, where the host asked him if he ever tried to persuade Khabib to return to MMA. Makhachev humorously responded, “Not why do I need this? There’s no need for extra competition.” Although Makhachev called it a joke, it certainly raised questions in the minds of fans.

‘The Eagle’ also dismissed any claims or intentions to return to MMA. Instead, he assured fans that they would still see him regularly, stating, “If you guys need champions, I’m helping my brothers to become champions… We have Islam [Makhachev], a champion, Umar [Nurmagomedov], the next contender, and Usman [Nurmagomedov], a champion.” This wasn’t the first time such speculation arose. Earlier this year, ONE Championship’s three-division MMA star Anatoly Malykhin gave his verdict on Khabib’s retirement.

Anatoly Malykhin’s honest take on Nurmagomedov’s retirement

Throughout his remarkable career, the more Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated his opponents, the more respect he gained, becoming an idol for young men in his homeland. His ability to stay humble while conquering the sport only amplified his influence. One name that stands out among those inspired by ‘The Eagle’ is Anatoly Malykhin. Since his debut in ONE Championship, Malykhin has become an icon in his own right. However, Nurmagomedov has always been a source of motivation for him, shaping his approach to the sport and life.

Last summer, Malykhin paid tribute to the Dagestani, expressing admiration for his decision to retire at the right time. Malykhin remarked, “What I like about Khabib is that when Islam Makhachev started winning, he stepped aside. He didn’t try to steal the spotlight. Khabib knew it was Islam’s time.” This act of stepping down gracefully resonated deeply with Malykhin, who saw it as a testament to Khabib’s character and selflessness.
