There was one figure who closely watched whenever Khabib Nurmagomedov fought. Switching between the duties of a father and a trainer, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was forever present in his corner. Therefore, when the Russian fighter lost his father, he didn’t hesitate to hang up his MMA gloves. He retired at the pinnacle of his fighting prowess. But what if something similar transpires and one of his sons decides to follow suit? Will he persuade him to keep fighting or cave into his decision?

‘The Eagle’ faced the troublesome question as he sat down with Patrick Bet-David. In the exclusive interview, he touched upon his comeback and his comparison with Michael Jordan. Further, he was presented with an amusing question when the host asked what he would do if he were no longer in this world and his son quit fighting, citing, “If my dad’s not here in my corner, I’ll never fight.”

The Dagestani fighter bid farewell to the Octagon partly because he lost the zeal to fight and partly because of his promise to his mother. Fighting runs in his genes, and thus it won’t be a surprise when either of his sons inherits the same and pursues a career in MMA. Hence, when asked the hard question, he was willing to leave it to his son.

He said, “Honestly, I’m gonna let him choose what you want. I’m gonna let him choose. Not because in my house we have freedom [of] speech between son and father. I’m still boss. But I’m gonna let him choose.”

Following this, the former UFC champion opened up about the role he was willing to play in choosing his sons’ professional careers. He then also drew a parallel between him and his father and what separates them. Does he want another future champion in his house?

Khabib opens up about his sons’ MMA career

The 34-year-old said, “About professional life, I’m not gonna force him at all. Because my father was [a] great competitor. He was one of the best coaches and but like what difference between me and my father? I am world champion and I’m not hungry to make my kids become world champion.”

“But I don’t know what my son gonna choose. But if you say I want to be like you, I want to be world champion. Okay, this is your choice. If you want, I’m just gonna help him. But I’m never gonna push him to become professional,” he added.

Therefore, the undefeated fighter is ready to play a minor role in his son’s professional life. But if his son decides to become an MMA fighter, he is also willing to impart the knowledge his father bestowed on him. This won’t be a new role for him, as he previously coached the likes of Islam Makhachev. However, he dropped all duties early this year to focus on his family.
